A Meryland Court overrulled a State law banning same-sex marriages. The WP reported today that Democratic politicians are pissing themselves over what to do. My letter to the Washington Post today:
So the leading Democrats in Maryland are flummoxed about what to do about same-sex marriage? My heart bleeds for them. They are afraid the Republicans are going to use this to hammer them in the next election, which they probably will since most Democratic politicians of the modern era seem to be curiously missing a backbone. That's too bad because I gave up on Republicans years ago. If we let them lead, my African-American wife and I would probably be in the same situation today as gays who want to marry. I've always expected more from the Democrats.
I'm a 60 year-old straight male. I admit that the mental image of two males in amorous embrace makes me very uncomfortable, but I have had enough gay friends, co-workers and acquaintances to know that a) the vast majority of them - if not all - were not gay by choice, and b) they are in no way inferior to me or any other American citizen because of their sexual orientation. That's why the Democrat's preferred solution of having the State continue to provide marriage licenses for heterosexuals while limiting gays to "civil unions" sounds too much like the old bigoted world of "separate but equal." Sadly, I'm certain most Democratic politicians deep down inside know this is right, but they have long ago forgotten that politicians are supposed to be leaders, who stand up for what is right, not timid panderers. Maybe that's why this country no longer has any leaders like Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy, or Martin Luther King anymore.
If the citizens of Maryland don't have the courage to extend State sanctioned marriage to its gay citizens, it should not extend it to heterosexual unions either. The only solution I see is for the State to stop issuing marriage licenses and issue civil union licenses to all. Let the churches call it marriage, issue a license, and include or exclude whomever they want (and let them answer to their God). At least this solution will allow the state of Maryland to walk away from this with some small shred of decency.
I think I'll send the letter to some prominant Maryland Democrats too, since the letter won't get printed. What a bunch of whimps we've got for leaders!
