Schafer is in some T R O U B L E
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 08:08 AM by nickshepDEM
Garin Hart Yang Research Group surveyed 505 likely Democratic primary voters and found Schaefer’s lead at a slim 42 percent to 36 percent, with 22 percent undecided.

For the record, I will be voting for Franchot. Not that I have anything against Schafer's style of politics, I just cant stand the guy in general. Its time for some fresh bloody, anyway.

1. He deserves to be in trouble
Hopefully he will be able to begin planning his retirement from public service after November 7, but I don't know, he has extremely high recognition, for obvious reasons and that may be hard for Franchot to overcome. I know I am supporting Franchot and now that the season is in full swing I hope Franchot will be making inroads into overcoming Schaefer's small lead and wooing the undecideds.
Schaefer's day has come and gone, and you are right - new blood is needed. He honorably served the public for many years, controversies aside, but he has overstayed, like an aging ballplayer. Sadly, he will be remembered for his cranky eccentrities more than his service.

2. franchot once tried to introduce privatization
be careful, franchot and robert flanagan once tried to introduce a bill to privatize corrections. fortunately, it was closed down when the unions flooded annapolis. do we know what this man is thinking now? what would he want to privatize next? privatization has been proven not to work. it's just more corporate welfare. what you see is what you get with willy don. i say, it's best to stick with the sure thing, what is predictable and proven over time.

3. Schaefer is not predictable and is basically a Republican
Peter has grown more liberal over time.

4. " ....... basically a Republican"
Hell yes, he is. He's basically Maryland's own version of Zell.

6. He endorsed Poppy Bush over Clinton in 1992. Some of us MD Dems
have not forgotten that.

5. I just reviewed the 2006
legislative record and the bills he sponsored and co-sponsored seemed to be pretty much in line with protecting the environment, improving access to higher education and providing for those who are the most in need, so I have a hard time taking exception to something he sponsored historically.

You are right, we do know what we get with Schaefer - and if I wanted to elect a Republican I would vote for a Republican.

7. As HST said, "Give the people the choice between a Republican in
Democratic clothing and a Republican and the people will choose the Republican every time."
