Visiting Baltimore. What's up with the radio stations here?!
I figured I'd try to find some friendly AM stuff, and what do I get?

Michael Medved-interviewing Barbara Erlich, when someone tqalked about how Ann Coulter is so much more genteel and refined and civil than liberal pundits
A local guy haranguing Kerry, of course
Ads for a local woman who insists that conservativsm cannot lead to fascism, only liberalism can

!

What the hell happened to Baltimore? It used to be a blue-collar town! Where are the liberal radio stations?

1. You are so right...avoid WCBM (680) and WBAL (1090)
I think that WCBM is actually worse that WBAL (since WBAL becomes "sports talk" after 6:00 pm).

It didn't used to be this way, when I was younger (I'm 40) WBAL had a great show hosted by Alan Prell. In fact, Prell left WBAL because they were becoming so right wing. The only "good" thing about WBAL is that they no longer carry Rush Limbaugh...of course, they replaced him with local right wing shows (Chip Franklin in the morning, and Ron Smith in the afternoon).

Your best bet might be to try WYPR (88.1 FM) - its our local NPR station, but they have (in my opinion) a really good show from noon - 2:00...his name is Marc Steiner. You might also be able to get the progressive station from DC on the AM dial (1260)...but the signal is so weak, I can barely hear anything.

Anyway, I apologize for our crappy radio stations (but I hope you enjoy your stay in Maryland!)

Tim

3. No need to apologize
I was just surprised by the raving crap coming over the radio.

5. "Raving crap" - that's the perfect term for it!!
To be honest with you, I tend to listen to Washington DC stations like 1500 AM (Washington Post Radio) or 103.5 FM (WTOP). WTOP is a 24/7 news station, and Washington Post Radio is their sister-station (a blend of news and talk). They're not perfect (in fact I tend to hear a bit of a right wing slant on Washington Post Radio - but that might just be me) but at least I can keep up with the headlines when I'm in my car.

7. I remember WTOP
For a good 2 years after 9/11, they started at least 1 story every quarter-hour with "Since the tragedy of 9/11..." How's that for rightwing spin and brainwashing?

2. Air America is on 1240
That's all the AM I know, but I'm more in the DC area.

6. It's 1260 and is out of DC.
I can normally get it up to the tunnel and only during daylight hours. Reception can be iffy anywhere outside of the immediate DC area.
