Any Eastern Shore DUers?
Just thought I'd start a thread to see if there are any other DUers who live on the Eastern Shore. I live up near the bridge but travel around the lower shore a lot.

I love the Eastern Shore, but have been feeling kind of isolated lately. I'm not usually much of a joiner but I have been thinking I might need to get out more and try to meet some more like-minded folks. Anyone know of any little pockets of progressives on the shore?

Living here, I sometimes have to remind myself that Maryland is a blue state. I went to Assateague last week and stopped in a little store that had Fox News on the tv and "Freedom Fries" on the menu. Ugh.

Anyway...if you're out there on the shore, check in here and say "Hi!"

:hi:

1. Sometimes they call where I am the
Eastern Shore, most of the time they forget we are part of MD at all. But we are on the east side of the bay even if at the beginning of it. :hi:

2. Hi CC!
:hi: Thanks for checking in.

I know what you mean about folks forgetting we are part of Maryland. I think a lot of people think Maryland ends at the bay. It's sad, because the Eastern Shore is the prettiest part of Maryland (IMHO.) Not the most progressive, for sure, but definitely the prettiest.

3. The prettiest with lots to
do but definitely not the most progressive so we need every one we can out there trying to talk some sense into the rest.

5. It is a whole different
world than the west side of the bay once you get into the small towns and rural areas. You need to take a day trip sometime.

6. You definitely need to take a road trip.
If I have some time this weekend, I'm going to post a travelogue thread for you about places to visit on the shore. I'm a big road-tripper and have been doing some serious exploring lately. There are so many beautiful places over here (Kent Island, Saint Michaels, Oxford, Tilghman Island, Nanticoke, Assateague, Crisfield...I could go on and on...)

Some of these would be an easy day trip for you, others are better for a weekend get-away. This is one of the best times of the year to explore the shore, before the summer/ocean/tourist crowds descend.

14. I did...
Last summer I took a Wednesday off and went to Assategue Island and stopped in Berlin for lunch. It was a great day, I spent it reading on the beach. I plan to do it again (just find a better place for dinner). I will agree with everyone that its a great part of the state despite it being the soft of place where most people ask "Which church do you go to?" not "Are you religiously involved?"

9. Hi, frog92969
I'm in QA. We're practically neighbors! I'm not from here originally. I was born in Virginia and grew up in Central/Western Maryland. I moved to QA in '92 to live on the water.

Don't give me that...you came here to get away from the rattlesnakes and bear.
I don't blame you.

12. Rattlesnakes and bears-lol!
I'm posting this from a campsite in the Great Smoky Mountains. I've been looking for bears for days now and haven't seen any so I laughed when I read your posts. I have bears on the brain.

Did Kent Island get hit by bad storms this week? I heard Central Maryland had a lot of power outages but I haven't heard anything about the shore.

13. The storm
looked like it lost alot of energy crossing the bay.
It wasn't very impressive in Kent Co, and looked to be about the same in QA.
We were under a tornado watch but I didn't hear about any showing up.

Have fun camping, I hope it's cooler up there than it is down here.

15. I've seen protestors occasionally in front of Salisbury U ...
not protesting SU, just in a very public, visible spot. Haven't seen them for a while. I once brought back a large pizza to share and have a chat but they had left by the time I got there. :( The pizza turned out to be kind of crappy, so maybe it was just as well. Haven't seen any more protestors for a while; I think the Summer Siesta is upon us.

We called it Salisbury State back then. I dropped out, spent about a year drying out and then transferred to Towson. That's where my love for the Shore began. Good times.

17. Wish I knew you better!
Not enough bridges. If there was one from Baltimore, I think a lot of us would come visit more often.

I went to Ocean City a few weeks ago. Happily, the traffic was "reasonable" on a Saturday afternoon. But coming back on Monday, it seemed as though everyone and their kangaroo was trying to get to the Boardwalk. At 2 miles per hour.

And I've heard that we have a reasonable sized group of SGI Buddhists over there. Not the most conservative people in the world! :-)

I'm planning to drive over more often. You're right - it's beautiful.

But I still hope they'll build another bridge some day.

Unless you actually prefer to keep the Eastern Shore to yourselves. Can't say I blame you.

20. I hope they build another bridge, too!
I wish they'd build one from Baltimore to Rock Hall or South of Annapolis to Saint Michaels. Anything to get some of the bridge traffic out of Kent Island. I live about 2 miles from the bridge. I have to remind myself not to go out on Sunday afternoons to avoid getting caught in the back-ups.

I bet you're having fun. I used to work at the beach in the summer while I was in college. Those were fun times.

I usually did the reverse of what you are doing. I lived in Md and worked in Fenwick Island, Delaware.

Do you just work in OC during the summer or year around? I'm strange in that I prefer Ocean City in the winter. My best friend lives there and that's usually when I visit.

and OMG - we are overrun with them. Good Lord. If I didn't know better, I'd swear MD has suddenly turned red. BLEAH. It takes all my strength not to tear them down but I know that's asking for bad karma. And what do I get? My one measly sign was stolen from our lawn. The big "Eastern Shore for Obama" sign on RT 8 was down in a day. Nice, hey?

26. Sounds like here.
I have my Obama sign closer to the house than I would normally put it so it isn't stolen. Since people are terrified of my dogs it might be safe and has lasted 4 days so far. Not many Obama signs but tons of McCain/Palin/Harris signs. Course the RNC probably had them at the ready for when the paper did the story on stolen and defaced McCain signs. The Obama signs were hard to get so one reason there are so few but the other is people are afraid to put them out. The racist are still cowards around here but they do tend to creep around at night vandalizing people's home and property. The up side is there are less of them and there is no quiet approval from the rest of the population. The area is slowly getting better.

Edited to add- Seems some stolen McCain signs were removed by property owners. The repukes forgot to ask permission. I used to call them to come get them when they did that here. Now I burn them and then call to tell them not to place them on my property. Next is a call to the Dem headquarters to tell them I have a great corner for signs and give them permission to use it.

28. Hi Olney Blue,
Sorry I didn't see this post before.

The McCain/Palin signs are thick on Route 50 but I haven't seen as many in the residential areas as I saw of Bush signs in '04. I'm seeing a lot more Obama bumperstickers than I would have expected, which is cool. Mostly, it seems as if there are fewer signs in general, at least on houses and businesses.

What part of the shore did you visit? Did you wave at me as you drove through? :P
