Maryland Democrats selected former congressional candidate Terry Lierman as the state party's chairman last night, after his only opponent dropped out of the race and endorsed him.
Lierman, a lobbyist and wealthy businessman, has close ties to the progressive wing of the party and believes that Democrats need to reach out to their base as well as identify new voters as they prepare for the 2006 governor's election.
"What we have to do is engage everyone," Lierman said before the vote.
His opponent, Frederick lawyer and party activist Dan Rupli, had argued that the party needs to do a better job of reaching out to rural voters.
