How is everyone doing with this latest snow storm?
Edited on Wed Feb-10-10 10:36 AM by deepthought42
Remember to be careful if you go outside! The wind is getting crazy here in Annapolis. A lot of power outages are expected (again). Silly me, I was hoping to leave my house one of these days...

This pic I took on Saturday (2/6/10). One of our neighbors has used a snow blower on part of the side walk. You can see the snow is taller than our dog Torpedo!

1. Hunkered down watching it snow and blow
I have my mother here with me because she lost her power in the last storm and it got really cold in her house, I couldn't get out to get her. Since I didn't lose power, we are figuring that she is more likely to lose power than I will be, so I brought her over yesterday. We will be fine, as long as we don't kill each other. Don't get me wrong, I love my mother, but she is 79 and very set in her ways. I think the wind is supposed to get worse later this afternoon, crazy weather we are having in this area. And so far, the power is still on at her house. She is a good dem at least.

4. I understand...
I've been stuck inside for most of the past couple of weeks with my family. Not the most pleasant situation at times... I hope your mother gets power back soon. We have been lucky so far - we lost power for an hour on Saturday but so far, so good.

5. Yeah, I think we actually saw a plow today
But who knows when the roads will be safe(r). I haven't been to work much recently, and I'm actually missing it.

3. I'm very fortunate that I never lost power
Not over the weekend and not today (yet, it's going to be windy for a while). The plus side of being snowed in and having power is getting some things around the house done. I live in Germantown and work in Frederick so I'm not sure I'll be making in tomorrow either! I'm not shoveling the driveway until tomorrow because of the wind.

6. The wind's been crazy!
Luckily we haven't lost power either. Just an hour this past weekend. Work? I worked for 2 hours last Friday and that's been it for awhile... I did a little bit of cleaning, but eventually I'm going to need to get more food... :\

7. If the wind stops and
the power stays on I will be fine. I'm not going anywhere anytime soon.

Pictures here though there is a language warning with them. More for the wind that makes the lights flicker and makes stuff bang out there in the dark than for the snow.

8. Our problem is the mail
Edited on Fri Feb-12-10 12:37 PM by Chalco
They stopped delivering Friday, the 5th. Then, each day they said they were coming and didn't. I went to the post office Tuesday and asked for my mail, they said it was being delivered. Never came. Then, my husband and I went to the postoffice and asked where our mail was. They gave us a few pieces. "Where's the rest of it, and why hasn't it been delivered?" Response "Oh, they guy who delivers to your street didn't show up today, so no mail's being delivered."

So I wrote a letter of complaint and got this in response--

"I truly am sorry to hear that you have not recieved any mail in so many days. we have had to deal with not recieving mail ourselves from the suburban plant. We are attempting to deliver as much mail as possible on the streets that we can get to. If the sidewalks and or the access tothe mail boxes are not clear on the whole street, the carriers have the option of not delivering the whole street. Hopefully we will be back to normal deloveries soon.
Ed Montano, SCS
Rockville Main Post Office
(301) 838-4228

To which I responded--"The delivery man didn't show up today. So no mail was delivered. What ever happened to substitutes? We need our mail and so does everyone else on our street!

If the policy is that if they do show up to work and they don't have to deliver if access is not clear on the WHOLE street, that gives them an excuse to not deliver on every day of the year."

My husband went to the post office again this morning, they gave him 4 pieces of mail which obviously had been mailed last week. When he asked again where is the rest of our mail, the person behind the desk said, "Oh it must be in some building being processed."

9. No mail delivery here in St. Mary's County since Thurs., Feb 4.
I called the local P.O. on Wednesday (the 10th), and there wasn't even anyone at the P.O. to pick up the phone.

I called again on the following day (Thursday the 11th), and was told that if the postal carrier can't access the mailbox, I'll have to pick it up at the P.O.

On Friday (the 12th), I went to the P.O. on my lunch hour and told them I haven't had mail delivery in a week, so I wanted to pick up my mail. The guy looked haphazardly in random shelves, drawers, and cabinets, and then came back and told me the mail carrier must have taken my mail out in the truck with her. But when I got home that evening, STILL no mail in the mailbox.

So today (Saturday the 13th), I stayed out on my front driveway for 2 hours waiting for the mail truck to come down the street. When she pulled up to the mailbox (and yes, the mail truck was able to get within 24 to 30 inches from the mailbox), I walked up to her truck to collect my mail, and she said she didn't have any for me! She said she was a substitute, but the regular carrier must have put a hold on my mail!

I told her I just went up to the P.O. yesterday to collect my mail and was told it was on the mail truck.

Then she tried to tell me the problem was that the mailbox was inaccessible because of the snow. So I showed her that I was standing on clean, dry pavement and was able to open the mailbox simply by extending my arm; therefore, the mail carriers should be able to do the same.

She made some excuse that they can't be jumping out of their truck at every mailbox. My response was that the mail carriers are able to get out of the truck to walk 40 ft and set big packages under my lamppost, so they ought to be able to get out of the truck and take one step to deliver mail to my mailbox!

To her credit, the sub carrier called the P.O. on her cell phone, and said if I go to the P.O. before closing (in half an hour), they'd get me my mail.

So I immediately got into my truck, passing the mail carrier on my road, and went to the P.O., madder than blazes. I told them that I hadn't gotten mail in over a week, that I came in yesterday to pick it up and was told it was on the truck, and that I just talked to the carrier on the truck, who told my my mail was at the P.O.

The guy again hunted around the P.O. haphazardly (they must not have specified places to store mail "on hold") and after 15 minutes he finally found my mail in a heap on a counter, amongst staff members' purses and other personal belongings.

With my mail finally in my hands, I asked him what about next week? Is my mail going to the mailbox or do I go have to go to the P.O. to collect it? HE COULDN'T TELL ME!!! He said it was the regular mail carrier's decision, but since she was off, he couldn't say.

Obviously, this whole experience has me livid, and I'm still thinking I should write a letter to the regional Postmaster telling what a slipshod operation this P.O. is.

Seriously, I think it is a Maryland problem. I never had this problem in the midwest, where it's always snowy in winter, yet the mail always gets delivered because the carriers aren't too precious to walk a few steps to reach the mailbox.

10. We got some mail today.
I suggest you complain a lot. There is no excuse for this shoddy service.

I'm missing lots of mail. Since my husband and I each have our own businesses and work at home we know what was sent to us and when, and we're missing a lot of important stuff.

Complain.

11. They actually did a good job keeping Bradley Blvd west of Wisc. plowed.
Smaller streets were plowed about a week later.

Monty County did a BAD job of advising folks that in a snow emergency county parking garages are free if you want to get your car off the street and out of the weather. They're free for the duration. No one knows that.

12. Support Maryland Candidate
I'm supporting a local candidate for Mayor in Cumberland, MD. He is progressive and embodies all of the kinds of things that we really need in our community. Can anybody help with an idea of how to raise some funds to help him run? He has a website that lets you donate online at http://electbriangrim.com/contribute.htm but I was thinking if there was a way to get a bunch of people to just donate like $10.00 it would be really helpful.
