Marylander here Stuck in repuke infested Harford county!
Anyone else in Harford co? I am a Harford native,And I fear this county has grown itself out of DEM control(Fuck you Turner!),and because of this pandering of Harford County as a prestigious adress it has called in all the keep up with the joneses,and wannabe rich, so it has turned the voter base republican,It changed over sometime in the 80's with the influx of all the new rich reagan types (really middle class) mostly white people with thier kids.
Alot of the new people here are rude,inconsiderate, self-centered,competitive insecure people running away from lives they had,or running for the money, with no connections to the land or to thier neighbors outside of consumerism and church,cliging desperately to what they got and thirsting for more,playing 'stablity at any cost'.They are republican because they want to protect what they got and they think republicans care about them. Theres alot of scared,unhappy diconnected people running away from the big bad city(read:black people) here.Running away from the appearance of poverty by moving into those big cheaply made overpriced all the same cavernous houses in tiny yards with no trees.It's such a facade.
Nice on the outside rotten on the inside.
Kids out here suffer for want of thier own voice, for thier parents emotional support.They tend to run away to the city to escape the stifling pretensious of normalness and upstandingness imposed by christian republican parents ..Or they wanna escape the pretender "liberals" out here that are really just republican lite with a surface deep diversity or enviro concern but are just as controlling as thier totally republican counterparts.,.
There have been conservative tendancies early on in Harford county.,it isn't JUST the developers fault..In the 70's families were not forced to be chasing work from town to town as much, and there wasen't such long work hours and long commutes keeping people isolated from each other in the home or outside the home .The changes in our cultural relations have made it so people can't put down roots and establish neighborhoods with neighbors who know each other as people and feel safe enough at home to keep thier doors unlocked anymore.
It is corporate greed and developers gone wild that has caused this problem mostly.
When I was a kid out here we NEVER locked our doors.We could be different somewhat,We had a social safety net...But when the growth and the money came rolling in ,we began to lock the door.
A rapid influx of population growth in an area causes alot of harm it is a serious dissconnection in the minds of government out here.Growth fuels the ever expanding of homes,roads and business, that harms wildlife and the land in terrible ways .Just like chasing job transience causes a social disconnect and disregard for the land too.
People come here with a romantic veiw of 'country'life after they live here awhile they find it is empty propaganda to sell homes.
Harford county has become a neighborhood of strangers and people relate on appearances. Like living in an apartment complex only with nicer houses.
Harford County has become duiifferent, it has become overwhelmingly republican,nimby,agressive in a me first way and so and pretensious.
There is a libertarian party presence here (whattajoke) and a republican one.No Harford county group for DEMS! And this change that money brings is why. The union is apathetic,and the union president is the only one who gives a damn enough to do anything to protect workers.The workers use the union when their boss shafts them but do not care enough about solidarity to get involved with thier local and make it strong.
On a positive note,I have begun to notice rumbles of discontent swelling up fronm below out here,overheard at the gas station(someone in a polo shirt filling up a gas hog SUV whining about gas prices and blaming bush,at the post office I talk to a woman in 'sensible shes" bitching about health insurance ,in line at the grocery store a few people bitching over grocery costs ..ahh nothing turns people away from repukes the pain of like sticker shock threatening the overdone standard of living of those in debt up to thier eyeballs,makes 'em forget about the boogeyman raising of taxes a little).Maybe some of the yups out here are getting pinched and losing faith in the bushhole!
But I wonder about things that may change here when the shit hits fan and these families fall one by one get and to live the other side of life, can't get work or afford a long commute they will wish they voted for a social safety net,funded a bus system to baltimore (where jobs are) sell those gas hogs,wishing they had voted a homeless shelter nearby when they are moving out today broke with nowhere to go,broke back in with mom,or to a cheap hole in the wall so the creditors won't eat them alive..They blew the state cache on bullshit and developers took it now the money's gone..Oh what to do..
The people out here are that ignorant,they are such assholes if you look under that money given pretensious patriotic god fearing veneer.They are seething.Tense,type A personalities gonna blow and go look for someone other than themselves or the rich fucks that sold them a load of shit,that money is happiness to blame...for thier 'misfortunes'
Stupid pretensious repug fucks. They don't want to think they are being duped and used by the rich they idolize and ape.. When the yups can't afford to go to the mall and can't get work to fill up thier suddenly not so busy lonely lives and thier kids begin to feel on the short end o the cultural school games out here of discriminatory competition that requires kids to have the 'right' clothes,stuff and gadgets the wealthier kids have and adults feel the scrutiny of thier neighbors chafing thier egos making them feel poor again..oh what will they do with all that anger..? Go to Edgewood's projects or Harve de Grace and beat up some poor people?,Go beat up a gay,scapegoat a hippy or black person,hate a punk,or slash the tires on a pagan's car?
I saw that Racist groups like Aryan Nations, have been laying out flyers around here..Is this the kind of area where the repugs will recruit "brownshirt" troops for the 'culture war'?
I think a vocal, active,united democratic prescence and voice out here is needed. Yeah I am angry.I hate what has happened to the soul of Harford Co. I have seen it mutate into a place I barely recognize as home sometimes. Hmm it's roadkill time,because every year more of the of forest is being ripped up for the endless cul-de-sac all the same housing complexes and faceless business parks so the deer,racoons and other critters have no place to go to live.Animals can't live in the monocultured rectangles of green that homeowners who have no time create to imitate the rich just to look like"good homeowners"what a cruel joke this county has become..
