Ehrlich Associate Targeted O'Malley
http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/politics/bal-te.md.resign09feb09,1,7604723.story?coll=bal-home-headlines

<snip>
A longtime campaign operative of Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. resigned his state job yesterday after admitting he had been spreading rumors on the Internet about the personal life of Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley.

Joseph Steffen, 45, said he gave the governor his resignation after questions about his postings on www.FreeRepublic.com, a well-known conservative Web site. The postings discussed O'Malley's marriage.

Amazing what lengths they'll go to.

2. I had just heard the rumors
I was working a fundraiser this past weekend with my service organization. One of the people participating lives in Baltimore City and she was telling me the rumors (she seemed to believe it). I had expressed to her my appreciation for all thing Martin O'Malley, which is why she offered the info. The story she had heard was really vicious. The Washington Post has a few more details and is a little less careful with the feelings of the Erlich Administration.

I cannot tell you how happy I was to read this in the paper this morning. While I had strong doubts about the rumors, I kept thinking where there's smoke... I was particularly concerned about this coming out during the heart of the race for Governor.

3. I'm a strong O'Malley supporter, but I fear
this may not go away. And God help us if there's even a grain of truth to it. Now that he's made a flat-out denial of it, he's staked out his territory. That gives the Ehrlich and his nazi brown shirts the defined target they need.

Forcing O'Malley to take a firm stand may well be the win they wanted. Watch your ass, Marty, they're gunnin' for ya!

On the up side, this should settle who Ehrlich wants to run against. And it isn't O'Malley.

4. A lot of questions are raised by this - not over for Ehrlich
First of all - exactly what was Steffen doing for his 70 thousand + on the state tit? It appears that his role has been mostly if not entirely political - while disguised as some kind of efficiency analyst. I believe Ehrlich has a lot of 'splainen to do here. Also - did Steffen post his poison from state owned computers???? Who hired Steffen and what was his job description? Anybody being paid with state dollars is supposed to have a specific job description and be accountable for it? Who knew what Steffen was doing and were others involved? What did Ehrlich himself know? His spokesperson says he did not know about it - sorry Bobby, as a Maryland taxpayer that is not good enough for me. Shit should hit the proverbial fan for this. I believe a special prosecutor is needed to get to the bottom of all of this.
