This is a terrible loss. Senator Barrios is one of the most inspiring and brilliant politicians in the state. Perhaps even in the country.




Senator to resign, accept Blue Cross Foundation position

BOSTON -- Sen. Jarrett Barrios, an ambitious lawmaker who's championed public safety issues and vigorously defended the high court ruling that allowed him and other gays to marry, said Tuesday he's resigning to lead a foundation that promotes health coverage statewide.

The Cambridge Democrat, who plans to resign in early July, told The Associated Press that he accepted an offer Tuesday to become president of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation.

"My goal in the House and Senate has always been to improve the life opportunities of the commonwealth's most vulnerable citizens. This job's goal is no different," Barrios said.

Barrios, who has sat on the foundation's board since its inception, would succeed Nancy Turnbull, who resigned to return to Harvard University's School of Public Health. Barrios would not comment on his salary, which he said is still being negotiated.

(Boston, Massachusetts) Massachusetts state Sen. Jarrett Barrios (D) announced Tuesday he will step down to enter private business.

The openly gay Barrios said he will leave the State House in early July to become president of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation. What effect that will have on the battle over a proposed amendment to the state constitution to bar same-sex marriage remains to be seen.

The proposed amendment is the result of a petition drive by conservative groups. Amending the Constitution requires just 50 votes in two consecutive joint sessions of the House and Senate, called a Constitutional Convention, in order to put the measure on the ballot.

Jarrett Barrios was one of the BEST we had, right up until he sold us all out and jumped ship for a lucrative job at a Republican-owned health insurance immediately after they passed a law requiring everyone in Massachusetts to purchase health insurance...

Why would I be supportive of a politician who's more than willing to throw my rights under a bus?

Why would anyone in their right mind praise the sort of politician that supports measures like this one?...
