Hooters a big bust in New England
Submitted by adamg on Sat, 06/30/2007 - 7:03pm.
MetaBoston reports and tears into some pointy-headed rent-a-quote who claims it's because we're all a bunch of anal Puritans, not because we have better taste or because the chain ran into financial or management problems here.

Did Hooters Close in NE Because of Puritanism?

Hooters has shuttered its New England outposts in a rare setback for the popular casual eatery/oglery. Marketplace turns to Bentley College marketing prof Andy Aylesworth for guidance and receives some dubious-insights:

We're the home of the puritans, the Salem Witch Trials, Hahvud, Boston Bluebloods. From a demographic point of view, I'm not sure that Hooters in New England is a good fit.

I think we can agree that cultural reasons lie behind Dubai's rejection of a proposed Hooters. But the northeastern failure will more likely be traced to management or finance problems and not the disdain of Boston Brahmin descendants ensconced in Beverly Farms.

First of all, the Hooters at issue were in New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New York and Massachusetts so a Bostonian focus is too narrow. Besides has this professor ever been to Lansdowne Street, Boylston Street, etc? Second several Hooters are prospering in preppy Connecticut. Third, Hooters is biggest in the Bible Belt and religious South which would seem to be a more vibrant cultural norm than puritanism up here. Sounds like a cute story but doesn't make much sense.

Personally, I stopped eating at Hooters when I discovered they donate almost exclusive to Republickers.

2. I improved upon it somewhat from the original to make it even more tittyriffic.

The original headline was, "Hooters proves a bust in New England."

I thought about just saying, "Hooters big bust in New England," but it didn't accurately communicate what was verb vs subject without "a" in it.

Although, I could have said, "Hooters are big busts in New England," since there are multiple Hooters that are big busts throughout New England, now that I think of it.

3. I always figured the reason places like Hooters don't prosper in...
I always figured the reason places like Hooters don't
prosper in New England (and other liberal areas) is
that we're too busy having *ACTUAL* sex with people
we like to bother going somewhere to watch vague,
lewd suggestions of sexuality offered by strangers.

The contrawise proposal also explains Hooters (et al.)
popularity in the Bible Belt.

4. Also included some in NY state
I know it included one at the Carousel Center in Syracuse. It's not puritanism - NY isn't NE. It's just good progressive sense!
