Travel to the September 15th demonstration in DC? "Peace Trains"?

Mr. Tesha and I would like to travel to the September 15th
anti-war/pro-impeachment demonstration in Washington, but
I have to admit that it's getting tougher and tougher for
our old bones to make these "overnight" sort of jaunts down
to our nation's capital.

At the moment, there's no bus from our immediate area;
we're considering riding the Amtrak "red-eye" down and
the afternoon train back north (as we've done in the past),
but in the past, there have also been chartered trains
from New Haven, CT (at least to the demos down in NYC;
not sure about DC).

Does anyone know who used to organize the "Peace Trains"
and how to get in contact with them?

And, of course, feel free to use this thread to discuss
anything else about travelling to the demonstration.

5. No sure I would want them there

Nothing sucks more then having to keep track of 3 teens in a huge crowd. They are 13-15-17. It's not that they aren't old enough, it;s just that I could worry a bit less if I knew they were home safe and sound. If I can find a friend to stay with them and a room at a decent rate I might do the over night thing.

6. I brought my 16 yr old to DC in Sept. '05 - (pics)

We arrived on his 17th birthday and he had a great time, stayed near me
during the march and he was just fine! He later mosied up to our hotel,
after marching all morning with me and he got some food and relaxed in
our room. I stayed to rest my feet and cheer on the rest of the marchers.
It was right down the street from our hotel. It was a great learning
experience for him!! Very friendly crowd and a lot of young people too!

7. My oldest would do fine

The younger boys would be my worry. I am going to try and come up with the means to be there.

Additionally: I hope it will be mostly aimed at getting us out of Iraq. The last one that I watched on c-span a couple years back seemed to turn into more of a Palestinian group protest and less of an Iraq war protest. Not that I disagree with the Palestinian groups, but I would hope we could focus on the one issue that 70% of the country agrees with, without turning people off by adding in an elephant of a wedge issue.

8. What you saw were the speeches before the march!

Of course the MSM played up those speeches and they were at the end of the rally
on the green in the rallying field. Most of the marchers didn't even hear those
speeches because they were all getting in loose formation to begin the march.
I didn't hear much of it and we left to go get near the street to start marching.

They have scholarships available now for help with tickets! Call them or e-mail them asap!!
If you do go,(I hope to go too) make sure you bring big bottles of H20 for each of you! ;)

The march IS about getting out of Iraq and Impeachment!

9. Can't the 13 yr old do a sleep-over at a friends house?

That's what I would do and then just bring the older two. ;)
There are museums near there too! Like the Spy Museum.
Really interesting. ;) And of course the Washington Monument,
the White House, Lincoln memorial, The Vietnam Wall, etc.
And old trolley car tours, double deckers, like in Boston.

10. Not really

He's a bit slow so that can be a problem. I am hoping I can drop them off with some family or their dad. I just don't have it all worked out yet. Are you going on one of the buses and if so from where?

11. I'm not sure yet. I have to contact them too!

I drove down last time but that is a longish drive.
I had to have new brakes when I got back and I don't
want to do that again. :( I have to find out how much
the tickets are. I guess I should call them! ;)

If I go on a bus, it'll probably the one out of Boston.
I'll take the train from Norfolk into Boston and then
the subway over to North Eastern U or just park at Woodland
and then take the green line in and get off on Huntington Ave.
Unless the Greenline is still under repairs. Maybe I can just
get my son to drop me off in Boston.

My college age assistant here at work expressed some interest in going also. I sent her to check out the website.

I think with gas costs the buses would be cheaper.

13. I thought of that too but my car

is a two seater! :P Little tiny 5 spd sports car. Good on gas though!

I'm also a smoker, so even the bus will be hard for me.

Must be nice to have an assistant! ;)

Gas in my town today, for Regular is $2.59 a gallon.

Lowest I've seen it in a few weeks.

14. I have a minivan

I was thinking more about carpooling into Boston since the train isn't running for the trip home. I'm a smoker too so the bus will suck. Not sure driving down would be cost efficient unless we had 3 or 4 people going, unless your car gets good gas. The advantage to the bus is meeting more local people with the same views. We have a few weeks to weigh the options.

15. I think I spent a total of about

$500.00 for the trip, up and back last time.
$300 of that was my hotel and food etc. I stayed
from Friday night until Monday AM check out, though.

It's about a 700 mile trip.

I get about 30 mpg on the highway.

I have a 10 gal. tank.

I made it there on one and a half tanks last time.

45 gals. X $2.59 = $116.55 one way. ( $233.00 Total) Approx.

Got to figure in tolls too, and I forget if there were any or how much.

Maybe the pike...to get to 95 south
