South Boston High School (opt-out)
via a yahoo group I'm on:

Joe xxxxxx and I hit South Boston High School today at 1:45. It rests on a hill with about 25 buses conglomerated around it waiting for students.

Were confronted by two School Policemen who were pretty firm in maintaining we could not pass out flyers in front of the school - the school sits back - iron fence surrounding - big gate through which kids egress. We therefore moved about 25 yds on either side - I was in middle of street between buses and caught kids to pass out over one hundred opt-out forms, and fifty 10 Commandements. Kids are really great - open - and not too many flyers hit the ground.

Got to talk with three teachers - two of whom said they will approach the principals (there are 3 separate schools at South Boston High School) and contact me about gaining equal access with recruiters.

I could not help but concentrate on the faces of these kids. It is amazing the physical makeup - some big small - some look old enough to be teachers - but universally there is the face of innocence, even beyond the makeup. If there is a God - it would be his work presenting these kids with other alternatives, albeit difficult.

ONe teacher told me her son was 21, and could not get any financial help with anything unless he registered for draft. For Bill Sweet - would you be more conversant with this situation, I just nodded my head because I did not know.

All the teachers wanted the war over - but I did not feel they felt the children impacted by the system. I felt good doing it.

Tony

uhc comment: It's opt-out time - kids must turn in signed forms the end of September to avoid being hassled by military recruiters. My chapter of the VFP is very active in this project.
