BROCKTON —

Mayor James E. Harrington is supporting Gov. Deval Patrick’s proposal to allow three casinos to open in Massachusetts, according to the Massachusetts Coalition for Jobs and Growth.

The coalition announced Wednesday that Harrington and two other mayors in the state have joined its campaign promoting the governor’s plan.

Casinos are opposed by officials in many area towns. Seventeen local communities are members of the Regional Task Force on Casino Impacts, which is trying to fight the plans by the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe and its investors to build a $1 billion casino in Middleboro.

The two other mayors who joined the coalition are John Moak of Newburyport and Mark Hawke of Gardner. The Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts, a union representing more than 12,000 firefighters, also joined the campaign.
