Source: Creedon will depart Senate and run for clerk post

Sen. Robert S. Creedon Jr., D-Plymouth, will not seek re-election to his Senate seat and instead will pursue the vacant clerk of courts position in Plymouth, a source told Lawyers Weekly.

Creedon, co-chairman of the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee, has served in the Senate since 1997.

Francis R. Powers, who was the clerk in Plymouth for more than 31 years, died of liver cancer last Friday. He was 84.

It didn’t seem possible, but there’s even more turnover coming to the Senate. The bleeding has been rampant over the past year, and word broke late yesterday that Robert Creedon, the affable co-chair of the judiciary committee, will be joining the stampede out of the legislature’s upper chamber. The twin lures of a fat raise and short commute are irresistible, apparently.

Report: Creedon to quit Senate for county job

BOSTON —

Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly is reporting that Brockton Sen. Robert Creedon will leave the Legislature to seek the Plymouth County clerk of courts job left vacant by the death of Francis Powers.

The publication reports it was told by an unnamed source that Creedon may announce his decision today not to seek re-election to a seventh term.

The state supreme court may appoint an interim clerk to hold office until a November election. Creedon is not believed to be seeking that postion, according to Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.

Creedon, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, has served in the Senate for 11 years.

BROCKTON -

BROCKTON - City politicians are jockeying for new seats after state Sen. Robert Creedon, D-Brockton, made his move Thursday to leave Beacon Hill to run for Plymouth County Clerk of Courts.

Within minutes of Creedon’s announcement, state Rep. Thomas Kennedy, D-Brockton, announced his bid for the senate, as the waiting line for Kennedy’s seat formed.

First out of the gate was Conor Yunits, son of former mayor John T. Yunits. Ward 2 Councilor Michael Brady said he is also running for Kennedy’s seat representing the 9th Plymouth District and Councilor-at-large Thomas Brophy said he hasn’t made a decision about running.

Creedon’s desire for the county job was no secret among area Democrats. He waited until late Thursday afternoon to make it official, pulling nomination papers shortly after Gov. Deval Patrick declared the vacancy.
