Upcoming veteran's services events via the Commonwealth...
Received via email:

Last time I emailed you the Women Veterans' Network was seeking a new Administrative Assistant. We were thrilled to have so many wonderful applicants. I am pleased to announce that we have hired Panayiota Bertzikis, a Coast Guard veteran and UMass-Boston student. You will get to know Panayiota as you interact with the WVN office or attend veterans' events around the state. We will be at Annual Women Veterans' Luncheon in Haverhill and the screening of Lioness at the Boston Public Library next month. Event details are listed below; we hope to see you there.

Second, the Women Veterans' Network is looking for nominations from across the state for the Outstanding Woman Veteran Award. Please help us get the word out about the Award and consider nominating someone. I've attached a copy of the nomination form. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, October 8 and the Award will be presented at a special ceremony at the State House on Friday, November 7, 2008 from 10:30-11:30 AM in the Memorial Hall of Flags. The keynote speaker will be Brigadier General Marie T. Field, who retired in 2007 as the highest ranking woman in the Massachusetts Air National Guard. The event is free and open to the public.

Do you need legal advice? The Mass Bar Association's Dial-a-Lawyer for Veterans will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2008, from 5:30-7:30 PM only. The phone number is 617-338-0610. Volunteer attorneys will offer free legal advice to veterans about access to benefits, family issues, employment concerns, landlord/tenant matters, and other legal issues.

And finally, the VA Boston is looking for female and male veterans who have been deployed in support of OEF/OIF to talk about barriers to VA care. Earn $75 for your participation in a group discussion about factors that impact OEF/OIF veterans' use of healthcare services. Participation will take up to two hours. The conversation will be informal and refreshments will be served. Free parking is available. Group discussions will take place in various locations across Massachusetts. Contact Emily Scheiderer, VA Boston Healthcare System (857-364-6293 or emily.scheiderer@...).

Annual Women Veterans' Luncheon

The Governor's Advisory Committee on Women Veterans invites all women veterans to attend this year's only women veterans' luncheon. Keynote speaker will be Kristin LaRue, a Navy veteran who is the new Veterans' Agent in Amesbury. A full turkey dinner will be served. Tickets cost $25 and must be purchased before October 4. To order tickets, send check (payable to "Women Veterans Committee") to Stephanie Landry (290 Newport Road, Hull, MA 02045). Call Stephanie with questions, 781-925-4486.

Screening of Lioness with Panel Discussion
Date: Tuesday, October 21, 2008, 6:00-8:00 PM
Location: Rabb Lecture Hall, Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston
Street, Copley Square.

This free community screening and panel discussion of the movie Lioness is open to the public. The film is about five female Army soldiers who fought alongside the Marines in some of the bloodiest battles of the Iraq war.
