Given Teddy Kennedy's health, he unfortunately may not be around much more than a year.
There's also rampant speculation that Kerry may take a cabinet position in an Obama White House.
If that happens, Massachusetts will abruptly go from having two of the most senior and respected US Senators to two brand new ones without any seniority.
Ted's health is actually one of the big reasons I would not be surprised to see Kerry stay in the Senate rather than join an Obama Admin.
In any event, who would succeed them? Ted has said he wants to be succeeded by his wife, Vicki.
Back in 2004, the prospect of Kerry's seat opening up prompted all the US House Reps to look at a race. Since then, however, Barney Frank has become chair of the House Appropriations Committee and Marty Meehan has retired become a university president. Ed Markey, Steve Lynch and Jim McGovern will probably run though. And Martha Coakley will likely run.
