The most random highway destination sign in the Boston area

You cross over to Milton from Mattapan Square and one of the first things you see is a sign pointing the way to Newport, RI, and you think "Huh?" Was there ever a time when people in Mattapan or Milton needed to know the way to Newport, RI?

1. Some of the sign placement planners must be nuts.
I don't have a picture but several years ago there was a sign on Grapevine Road in Wenham that had an arrow and mileage to Newton.

This section of Grapevine road in not anywhere near a main highway. It is a wandering small road in a woodsy, residential area on the upper North Shore. No-one would ever use this as a point from which to get to Newton.

Everyone laughed at it and a few years ago, it was replaced. Now it says how to get to Beverly and Salem.

We always thought is was someone' expensive private joke.

2. There used to be a sign with an arrow on Rte 1 (North Shore) that said "New York"
I always got a kick out of it. Don't know if it's still there.

4. There used to be a sign on the Castlegate Rd. area (outside Kenmore Sq)
that also said New York pointing towards Kenmore Sq.

6. THANK GOD!
If I ever get lost up there, I'll know how to get home.

I live slightly closer to Fall River than Newport though.
