Report: Red Sox plates went to Karyn Polito's supporters
Edited on Tue Oct-26-10 09:13 AM by Ian David
BOSTON—More than two-thirds of the first 100 Registry of Motor Vehicles Boston Red Sox/Jimmy Fund vanity license plates went to family, friends and supporters of Republican candidate for state treasurer Karyn Polito, according to a report Tuesday in The Boston Globe.

The state representative from Shrewsbury introduced legislation for the plates in 2002. Former Gov. Mitt Romney signed it into law.

The plates are supposed to be issued on a first-come, first-served basis, but it appears some people connected to Polito got lower number plates even though they applied for them after members of the general public. The words "per KPolito" appear on many of the applications, according to records obtained by the newspaper with a public records request.

Polito's Democratic opponent, Steve Grossman, told WBZ-AM that the distribution of the plates is "the kind of insider politics people hate."

Grossman slams Polito over low-numbered Red Sox plates

Democratic state treasurer candidate Steve Grossman this morning blasted his opponent, Republican state Representative Karyn Polito, after the Globe reported that she, her family, and her supporters had received more than two-thirds of the first 100 Red Sox charity license plate numbers.

"This is an abuse of power," Grossman said. "The people of this state know a sleazy practice when they see one."

Polito filed a bill in 2002 that allowed the Red Sox to issue the plate through the Registry of Motor Vehicles. The Jimmy Fund, which raises money for cancer research, was designated by the Sox to collect the surcharge on each registration.

When six plates were auctioned for charity in 2003, they drew huge sums: Ben Affleck paid $50,000 for the number 1 and Red Sox minority owner Phillip H. Morse bid $140,000 for Ted Williams's retired number 9.

2. This was an under-reported story about her from WRKO hate radio

I can't figure out why WRKO was never called out on this. Maybe, the media is just tired of pointing out WRKO's hatefest. But Polito, herself, showed her true colors by showing no outrage, lest she upset her voting base.
