Lawmakers Play Dress Up on Beacon Hill
We can look forward to a very efficient and effective legislative session on Beacon Hill. Lawmakers removed the last roadblock to good government: Jeans. Yes, the scourge of denim is gone from the state house. Spaghetti straps, track suits and Bruins jerseys are out, too.
Elizabeth A. Poirier, a Republican state rep. from North Attleboro, said members wore "inappropriate" clothes to the House chamber. On Thursday, lawmakers used a voice vote to approve the change to House rules to block informal fashion statements.
We're glad Poirier pinpointed the problem on Beacon Hill so they can deal with pesky secondary issues like the economy, healthcare reform and crumbling dams. We were worried that Speaker Robert A. DeLeo might show up in skinny jeans like the guy in the Miller Lite commercial. Or, Therese Murray has some Addidas gear she really wanted to wear to work.
Fortunately, the House rejected time-wasting proposals like requiring roll-call votes on tax increases.
