MA GOP Pre-emptively Registers Web Domains of Possible Dem Candidate
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 09:00 PM by TaleWgnDg

"Massachusetts GOP Pre-Emptively Registers Web Domains of Possible Dem(ocratic) Candidate
"Jeannie Shawl at 2:31 PM
"Wednesday January 12, 2005

"(JURIST) In anticipation of a run for governor by Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly (official profile, http://www.ago.state.ma.us/sp.cfm?pageid=873), the Massachusetts Republican Party (official website, http://www.massgop.com/) has pre-emptively registered website addresses that Reilly could have used as a campaign website. Despite the fact that Reilly has not said whether he will run for governor in 2006, the state republican party has registered several domain names, such as reillyforgovernor.com, with the intent 'to have some fun if he is indeed the nominee.'

"Legal experts suggest that the maneuver gives an (sic) new twist to the old practice of cybersquatting (Wikipedia article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybersquatting), giving rise to the traditional options of arbitration (ICANN dispute resolution policy, http://www.icann.org/udrp/udrp.htm) or selecting an alternative domain name.

Well? Uummmm . . . 'cause "sneakiness" is in their blood? It's part of being Republican? Indeed.

7. This is so stupidly juvenile
I am actually embarrassed on the the GOP's behalf, due to their making such public asses of themselves, even though I'm a Dem!

8. Something similar happened in the last Gov race
I don't know if the GOP had anything to do with it--maybe not--but the right wing religious wackos sure did. When Robert Reich ran for governor last time round, his site was robertreich.org. I don't know who bought robertreich.com, but when you typed that in by mistake(or not knowing the url), you got a serious religious-right/antichoice/antiliberal/you're-going-to-burn-in-hell type of site. Unbelievable!

14. I intend to bring this matter up at our local dem town committee
My state rep is on our committee and he should seriously consider buying up any domain name if he has ambitions for higher office.

This is one of my pet peeves actually; when are the people supposedly 'in the loop"in this party going to figure out that the internet has changed politics?
