Playing Dodge on Abortion by Ellen McNamara (mcnamara@globe.com)
Boston Sunday Globe, City & Region, page B-1, June 5, 2005

"Come out, come out, wherever you are, governor.

"We understand that you are in 'a different place' on the abortion issue, but we are having a heck of a time locating it and you. It is time to stop playing hide-and-seek with women's constitutional rights and show yourself.

"You may support Roe v. Wade. You may oppose it. You may even personally oppose it while you publicly support it, because, like it or not, the landmark 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision is the law of the land. The electorate appreciates nuance as much as it demands clarity. What you may no longer do is play 'now you see me, now you don't' with abortion rights.

"Michael Murphy took care of that when, in a moment of uncharacteristic candor for a political strategist, he told the National Review (Magazine) what the people of Massachusetts already suspected about their governor: 'He's been a prolife Mormon faking it as a prochoice friendly.'

. . . snip . . .

" 'While I've said time and again that I oppose abortion, I've also indicated that I would not change in any way the abortion laws of Massachusetts, and I've honored my promises,' you said on Friday, clarifying nothing since your recent interview with USA Today (newspaper) in which you professed to be 'in a different place than I probably was in 1994, when I ran against Ted Kennedy.' "

McNamara excels in poetically jabbing at Romney; however, she gives some of us progressives/liberals in Massachusetts no credit for observing Romney from the getgo as a wolf in lamb's clothing about Roe v. Wade and other related "family values" and such legal issues.

Mitt has always been a Mormon unable to separate his own personal religious views from law. Whereas, we here in Massachusetts feel our religion is a private/personal matter and therefore appreciate the first amendment's Separation of Church and State, Mormons such as Romney cannot. Similarly situated are most Evangelicals, conservative Roman Catholics, and Christian Orthodox. And, it is to those people, Romney is whistling his tune, not to us in Massachusetts.

See, e.g., prior DU thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=158&topic_id=4817&mesg_id=4841
Romney cannot separate his religious beliefs from stem cell research.
Romney cannot separate his religious beliefs from a woman's constitutional right to autonomy/abortion/privacy issues.
Romney cannot separate his religious beliefs from Right to Die with Dignity (Terri Schiavo issues).
Romney cannot separate his religious beliefs from equal rights of homosexuals as to civil marriage.

None of this is new. None of it.

pols like Ray Flynn, Joe Moakley, Tom Finneran, and now we know John Kerry. Mass. Dems have never had problems voting for pro-life candidates because Dems believe them when they say they will keep a woman's right to choose on the books. We may be skeptical of some like Finneran or Flynn, but still voted for them anyway. The thing about Romney is his own staff said he lied. Many may have fallen for his lie but it is refreshing to see someone on his own team come clean.
