WGBH radio - Romney is looking more and more "presidential"
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 07:00 PM by paineinthearse
I was driving when the news came on and almost gagged. The fawning female announcer read the same story at 5 & 6PM, describing how :puke: Mittens walked down corridors where employees were waving American flags. Later, in a cavernous warehouse, he posted with a back drop of camouflaged humvees, where he appeared "presidential".

Posing with war toys makes one "presidential" looking? What the fuck has happened to WGBH's objectivity? It used to be the premier PBS station in the nation!

Sheesh!

Searching for a picture, meanwhile, here's the coverage from the Globe/AP

Romney warns of flagging education system in speech at Raytheon
By Theo Emery, Associated Press Writer | August 30, 2005

ANDOVER, Mass. --

<snip>

The "townhall meeting" with employees at Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems unit, which integrates the military systems it makes for the U.S. government, had many trappings of a campaign event. Many employees at the factory are from New Hampshire, which holds the nation's first presidential primary. Romney, who's acknowledged that he's considering a presidential run, brushed on foreign policy topics, among them terrorism and the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as domestic issues, such as the nation's oil dependence and global competitiveness.

"Right now, as we think about what it takes to have a free society and a free nation, what it takes in order for America to lead the world, it takes an extraordinary amount of enterprise and people and technology and education. We face extraordinary challenges in America," he said. He hinted at an education package he plans to unveil in the fall, saying that he will propose pay incentives for math and science teachers. He also answered questions from the audience, who quizzed him about homeland security and the high price of fuel.

Before the speech, Raytheon officials distributed small American flags to their co-workers, who lined the factory's corridors, flags in hand or tucked into their pockets, to greet Romney as he arrived. In the cavernous room, where the defense company tests equipment, the podium was flanked with camouflaged-pointed Humvees on each side, and a missile launcher behind. In the rear of the room, a Raytheon radar truck towered over the crowd. "What's going on?" one employee asked as he arrived in the room. "Smile to the camera," another said in response.

After he finished speaking, Romney hustled to the rear of the room and greeted each audience members as they filed out, shaking hands and patting some on the back, as big-band march music blared over the loudspeakers. Asked afterward about his president-like appearance, he laughed and said, "I hope I looked gubernatorial."

psssstttt Mitt, you look like an elitist idjut.

1. Forget it.
The republicans aren't going to nominate him. He's worst of all worlds: he's a moderate in a conservative party, but because he's from Massachusetts, he will be assumed to be liberal everywhere; he comes from a democratic state and region and therefore no favorite son set of delegates; and his religion wouldn't be recognized by most christians as christianity.

4. worse than that -
he's from Utah VIA Massachusetts!

I won't "pooh pooh" this however. Back in 1999 I laughed when anyone predicted that George Bush would be President someday. So even tho Mitt is a blithering blooming bloody idiot - he's actually OVER qualified if we compare him to the current POTUS.

5. I didn't laugh at Bush.
You know why? He was a fairly popular governor from Texas. Do the electoral college math: he starts with what, 37 EV in his pocket.

Romney starts with zero. He has to go to Texas and convince them that he's not where he's from and that he has nothing to do with those other mormons in TX that have multiple wives.

6. too bad I wasn't as smart as you!
I was too naive - too trusting. And you are right about Mitt - he's got too many strikes against him and I'd be VERY surprised if Mass elects another repub gov for a while..... after Curly, Larrette, and Moe (Cellucci, Swift, and Romney) I think we'd like to see what's it's like to have a governor that has an IQ higher than their shoe size!

Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 09:00 PM by TaleWgnDg
email this entire thread to WGBH Radio . . . (or at the very least your OP): http://www.wgbh.org/contact/ (webmail)

BTW, are you sure it was WGBH? or was it NPR? There's a difference. NPR is the national organization that does the news every hour on the hour and then WGBH does its own programming. Or was it BBC? In any event, if you were tuned into WGBH (89.7 FM Boston) then WGBH is responsible for its own airwaves whether it was broadcasting its affiliate NPR or BBC. Give em hell, paineinthearse!

edited to add: I wonder. Was this during "All Things Considered" ?? But back to my original premise that WGBH remains responsible for its own airwaves.

16. The guy picked MA so that he could run for pres!
Good lord, am I the only one who saw this coming when Romney first ran for gov here, and picked MA since he was too moderate to win in UT? Just wait, the news media will be shocked, shocked! when Mitt skips on reelection and runs for the Rpuke ticket.

Don't count him out - the Mormons are very organized and if he can tap into the church hierarchy to play a big role in his campaign he'll have a huge base of volunteers. Plus he's got that great head of hair and oh-so-white teeth. Maybe he'll pull off another shirtless ad....
