Jehlen Tops Democratic State Senate Primary;
Somerville Liberal to Face GOP's White for 2d Middlesex (Senate) Seat

State Representative Patricia D. Jehlen of Somerville, who touted endorsements from leading unions and other advocacy groups as evidence of her liberal bona fides, cruised to victory last night in the Democratic primary to replace deceased state Senator Charles E. Shannon, Jr.
Jehlen, who has served in the House for 14 years, captured 38 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results last night. She easily outpaced her closest competitor, Somerville lawyer Joseph K. Mackey, who received 27 percent in his bid for a political comeback after 15 years out of office.
Michael Callahan of Medford, a member of the Governor's Council, got 22 percent, and state Representative Paul C. Casey of Winchester received 13 percent.
Jehlen will be favored to defeat William A. White Jr., a Somerville alderman and a Republican, in the Sept. 27 general election. The Second Middlesex district is heavily Democratic, but Shannon, running as a Republican in 1989, defeated a Democratic incumbent before switching parties seven years later.
