Anyone familiar with Holy Cross University in Worcester?
A friend's daughter, Stephanie, was starting her 3rd year at Loyola in New Orleans with plans to go on to law school in the fall of 2007. Obviously Katrina's caused an interruption in her plans, but after a couple of possible relocations to other Jesuit schools (Loyola in Chicago and Seattle University) it now looks like she'll be going to Holy Cross in Worcester. They're putting up 4 Loyola NO students, Steph being one, in RA's rooms and they're giving them their textbooks for free.

So, any info you can share about the school, the town, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

1. Feel good about Holy Cross,
its a fine institution, great academics, nice location on the hill,(Worcester MA is trying to renew itself). The area has always been safe as far as I know but the school is exceptional. What a good deed on the part of the school, we wish Stephanie well.

2. first rate university
roman catholic, great academics, Worcester is a nice little city. Large working class, easy to get around in but on the train line to Boston if you want to get there. Very easy human-scaled place to live. I lived there in 2000 --- great place for her to go. With all the NO stress she's undergone 1st or 2nd hand, that is a good choice.

3. I'm going there Thursday for a staff meeting. It's a beauty of a
campus but I don't really know the surrounding area too well, except that it's a pretty large city, so lots to do if you choose.

4. HC is located in Worcester (pronounced wha-ster)
I'm told the downtown area is a fun place for college kids. They also have a civic center called the Centrum that has good music concerts throughtout the winter.

A short ride north puts you on Rt 2, which leads you to the Berkshires.

I'd say a pretty good choice.

Well, what can I say? Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, is the alma mater of none other than ultra-conservative and reactionary Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, U.S. Supreme Court. Yup. It is. However, Thomas went to Holy Cross under "affirmative action" as he did all his education and/or u/ the gratuity of the Roman Catholic Church.

As a Bay Stater born and raised in Massachusetts (w/ certain hiatuses in other New England states), I feel I know my colleges particularly law schools since I am a graduate of them.

Yup. Holy Cross, although a Jesuit undergraduate college, is on the conservative side of Jesuit colleges. Lemme try to clarify this. Boston College in Newton (Boston), Massachusetts is one of the more liberal, expansive, and better Roman Catholic undergraduate and graduate universities in America. Boston College is also a Jesuit university. It has an excellent law school as well. But, it, too, does graduate some rather conservative thinkers at times but not to the overall extent as does Holy Cross in Worcester. In addition, Holy Cross has a chip on its shoulder regarding Boston College, always feeling it's second best (or worse).

In short, if your friend's daughter can transfer into Boston College, she'd be in a better school.

Oh, and btw, Boston College, despite its official name, is a university with several colleges under its umbrella.
