BOSTON -- Christy Mihos will announce Thursday that he intends to run for the governor
of Massachusetts as an Independent, NewsCenter 5 has learned.

Mihos, a former Massachusetts Turnpike board member and registered Republican, is expected
to hold a news conference sometime Thursday to announce his decision.

But if Mihos's independent streak will appeal to some voters, it could also prove to be a liability in his campaign. His impolitic remarks yesterday at the forum, for example, raised more than a few eyebrows.

Mihos was the last gubernatorial candidate to speak. After giving his wife, Andrea, a peck on the check, he strode to the microphone and promised to be brief by saying, ''My wife says I'm awful fast, so I'll try to stick to that." The joke prompted groans from many of the 400 people in attendance.

Moments later, Mihos noted that he had been married for 31 years; he joked that he married his wife when she was 5 years old. ''That will get me points tonight, too," he said to awkward silence.

After the event, Mihos was asked by reporters about his wife having told him in the past that she didn't want him to run for public office.

''She made a deal," Mihos said. ''She said, 'You can do whatever you want as long as I can have a new wardrobe.' It's going to cost me more to fund her wardrobe than it is to fund my campaign, I think."

As a woman,and a wife, and a mother to 2 girls, I am totally offended by his remarks

Christy Mihos has never been one known to hold his tongue or his swagger . . . indeed. Didn't he sue then Acting-Governor Jane Swift in her individuality? Yup, he did, which most of us in law thought was a bit below the belt! Tis one thing to sue as to duties performed while Governor, but another entire issue to sue one in individuality, meaning any damages awarded by the court comes out of one's own (Jane Swift's) personal pocket. Yes, Mihos was plainly vindictive against Swift despite his own multi-millionaire (billionaire?) status versus the modest income of Swift and her house-husband.

His remarks in this speech at issue, which apparently meant by him to be humorous, fell flat (as they should). Christy needs someone to instruct him on appropriate public speaking while running for elected office in Massachusetts, not while speaking b4 some business group! eh. Mihos has quite an uphill battle!

Extreme partisans are locked in a perpetual stalemate where power and influence is sold to the highest bidder. Just look at Jack Abramoff and Duke Cunningham.

Massachusetts is no different. Both political parties are more concerned with holding onto power than with helping people. The politics of confrontation has replaced cooperation. How else to explain the stalled economic stimulus package or the travels and tribulations of Governor Romney?

Throughout the country, our party system has become little but a form of political bondage designed to force people into a straitjacket of hero worship and partisanship

Okay Christy, can you tell me the date you changed your party registration? Ball park it for me if you can't remember

Would it be within the last few weeks???

Your outrage is awfully convenient since you decided to run for Gov and crunched some numbers and saw you couldn't win as a Republican which you've been your whole adult life even when you had your tiff with Jane Swift

11. How come Globe gives free space to Mihos?

The editorial amounted to campaign literature. They should have at least made him pay for one of their cute little "op-ed advertisement" boxes.

Meanwhile, the Globe continues its pointless digging into Deval Patrick's mortgage situation. This time, although it's all perfectly legal, the Globe writers worry that Patrick might not be able to compete with the rich guys. Why doesn't the Globe dig into Mihos' finances and give Patrick free editorial space to talk about "Why I'm running as a Democrat"?

And a somewhat veiled threat that they will continue to speculate about his finances and borrowing practises unless he opens up his financial records
