Question for DU Detriot.
I'm writing a story and I need some information about Detroit.

1. What is a name a well known hospital. This would be like a "celebrity" hospital. Like Cedars-Sinai is in Los Angeles. In other words, if Aretha Franklin had to go the hospital where would she go?

2. What is the name of a upper middle class residential area of Detroit. This would be an area with fairly large homes and/or condos. I'm talking about some place were maybe a doctor or a hospital administrator might live. Or is there an area in the city where there are high rise condos?

Thanky

1. As far as hospitals, I can't really think of a "celebrity" hospital, but
very often people go to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor for specialized care. It's probably the best hospital in the region.

There are quite a number of upper middle class residential areas: Bloomfield Hills, Grosse Pointe, Franklin, Birmingham

Birmingham has some high-priced high-rise condos if that's specifically what you're looking for. The closest big hospital to Birmingham would be Beaumont Hospital. It's an excellent hospital with a good reputation.

3. Henry Ford Hospital
Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 06:59 PM by LuckyTheDog
Henry Ford Hospital is top-notch: http://www.henryfordhealth.org/

So is the Detroit Medical Center (actually a cluster of hospitals under one umbrella organization: http://www.dmc.org/

As far as good areas: the Indian Village and Palmer Woods neighborhoods have big, beautiful old homes. And there are some nice high-rise condos on the east riverfront.

4. William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak/Birmingham as the burb
Beaumont Hospital is in Royal Oak, Birmingham is a very wealthy suburb just north of Royal Oak, which is pretty upscale itself these days.

Somerset Mall is the upscale shopping center (Sak's, Nordie's, Neiman Marcus and Macy's).

5. A couple of other residential suggestions

If you want to actually be in Detroit, UMC neighborhoods would include Indian Village and Boston/Edison.
Boston/Edison (named after two of the main streets) is full of grand houses (Henry Ford, SS Kresge and Berry Gordy all lived there at one time or another) and would be attractive to a doctor working in the Medical Center, as it would be only a couple of miles between home and office. Would be a little less to Henry Ford Hospital.
The Kales Building, for one, has high-rise condos/apartments and is right downtown on Grand Circus Park. The Book-Cadillac Hotel, also right downtown, is currently being rebuilt (opening autumn 2008) as a hotel/condo. It will have several condos on the upper floors (I think it's 33 stories -- it was once the largest hotel in the USA), almost all of which are already sold and any one of which would be perfect for a doctor.
Finally, there would also be Merchant Row along Woodward Avenue, between Campus Martius and Grand Circus Park. These loft apartments opened last year and are way popular with the UMC urban types.
The Medical Center is located in Midtown -- very close to Wayne State University. The distance between Midtown and downtown is maybe three miles.
Enough. You can probably tell I'm a Detroit booster (even though I live 100 miles north of there in Saginaw). You might also ask for suggestions at the Discuss Detroit forum at www.detroityes.com .
John
Happy to answer any other follow-up questions you might have.

8. If it's a young doctor...
I could also see them easily on Jefferson in one of those riverfront deals.

9. One thing you need to specify to real Detroiters, Ron
Are you talking about the City of Detroit or the Detroit Area (which could include the entire Wayne/Oakland/Macomb area; hell, I've heard folks from Ann Arbor say they're from Detroit!)
