Lawmaker arrested for driving drunk in East Lansing

A state lawmaker faces a possible second drunken driving charge within the past two years.

Rep. John Garfield, a Republican from Rochester Hills, was arrested early Thursday in the East Lansing area by Michigan State University campus police, his office said Friday.

Garfield, 57, also was arrested for drunken driving in 2005. He then checked himself into a rehabilitation center, noting he had a problem that was aggravated by pain medication he has taken for several years.

Garfield later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of driving while impaired in the 2005 incident.
''This is an ongoing battle he is fighting with alcohol,'' Dave Jessup, Garfield's chief of staff, said Friday. ''He is home in the district and is taking steps to deal with this.''

For the second time in two years, state Rep. John Garfield (R-Rochester Hills) has been busted for drunk driving. This comes three months after Rep. Garfield voted for SB 1241 and HB 6009, two bills which tighten penalties for repeat drunk drivers.

In that case the arresting officer will have to apologize in open court and Garfield will get a fat compensation check from the treasury department.
