3 shot in Michigan office building
Source: CNN.com

ROY, Michigan (AP) -- A gunman shot three people at a suburban Detroit office building Monday morning, and officers were searching for the shooter, police said.

The victims' conditions weren't immediately known, said Troy police Lt. Gerry Scherlinck. A spokeswoman for Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak said the three victims were taken to the hospital but could not provide more details.

Witnesses told Detroit broadcast stations that the shooter was a former employee of an accounting firm inside the building.

3. I bet one of those three wished that
they were packing a gun that day.
I mean, those "No guns allowed" signs that are stuck on doors are such a deterrent to crime.

12. Oh, right
What would've resulted was a shootout with probably more people dead if someone in the office was armed.

This guy had no business getting his hands on a gun period and, I read, he was denied a permit for a concealed weapon. I assume if he'd had one he would've shot the guys when they fired him instead of coming back to do it. The issue here is that the guy was able to get a gun anyway; either illegally obtained on the underground or that he went in and purchased a rifle at a sporting goods store. Having guns readily available makes people use them, even those carrying them lawfully. Like the woman who is on trial for shooting at a guy's tires on the expressway in a case of road rage. She had a permit to carry that gun legally and used it illegally.

Ordinary citizens do not need guns. Get rid of the guns entirely; if they aren't available legally or illegally neither 'law abiding citizens' OR criminals can get their hands on them.

13. Forty percent of U.S. households ALREADY own guns...

Forty percent of U.S. households ALREADY own guns. One third of women, and a quarter to a third of Dems and indies, already personally own a gun.

You will NOT take them, and even attempting to do so would be political suicide.

Merely raising the price on over-10-round handgun magazines, and requiring some new civilian rifles to have fake adjustable stocks instead of real ones, cost the House AND Senate in 1994 and the presidency in 2000. Care to speculate how well launching a damn civil war in order to take guns from forty percent of U.S. households would go over?

There is only one way I can think of to launch an Iraq-style insurgency in the United States, and you just advocated it. Let's not go there, please.

14. I hardly advocated an insurgency
Guns should never, ever, have been legal for private ownership in the first place, in my opinion. OF COURSE it would be chaos trying to get rid of them all at once but it can be phased out. People do not need to own guns; there are thousands and thousands of tragic accidents involving registered guns because people don't understand them and shouldn't have them in the first place. The mere presence of a gun can escalate an ordinary conflict into a tragic one. This guy should never have been able to get his hands on a gun and the fact that he did, whether legally or illegally, means they are far too easy to obtain and an innocent woman is dead because of it.

15. I didn't say you advocated an insurgency...

I hardly advocated an insurgency. Guns should never, ever, have been legal for private ownership in the first place, in my opinion. OF COURSE it would be chaos trying to get rid of them all at once but it can be phased out.

I didn't say that you advocated an insurgency, only that you advocate policies that would inevitably give rise to one if implemented, i.e. the idea that people who choose to own guns should be forced to surrender them. There are at least 300 million guns in private hands in this country, and most of them would not be surrendered voluntarily, whether you envision an all-at-once confiscation or something more gradual.

People do not need to own guns; there are thousands and thousands of tragic accidents involving registered guns because people don't understand them and shouldn't have them in the first place.

Actually, the number of gun accidents is around 600 per year, and falling. Gun accidents involving criminals and others unlawfully in possession of guns make up a significant portion of that number.

People don't need to consume alcohol, either, and alcohol causes about 100,000 deaths/yr in this country, far more than guns (and many gun deaths are alcohol related). But we don't outlaw the responsible consumption of alcohol, because (1) Puritanical nannyism is repugnant to Enlightenment ideals, and (2) Prohibition doesn't work. It didn't work for alcohol, it isn't working for drugs (marijuana is easier to get in a city than prescription foot powder, despite its consumable nature and 80+ years of harsh laws), and it wouldn't work for guns, which could be smuggled into the country disguised as a routine cocaine shipment--not to mention the third of a BILLION guns already in civilian hands here, that aren't going to go away. Lawful gun ownership rates are going up, not down, and have been for many years.

No, we'll keep our guns, thanks. If you don't like them, don't own them, and I'll work with you on addressing criminal misuse (background checks, safety education, etc.), but stay out of our gun safe, please.

The mere presence of a gun can escalate an ordinary conflict into a tragic one. This guy should never have been able to get his hands on a gun and the fact that he did, whether legally or illegally, means they are far too easy to obtain and an innocent woman is dead because of it.

Is heroin too easy to obtain in this country? Maybe we should ban it or something...

16. You don't need a permit/license in Michigan to buy a shotgun
And that's what he used. You can buy a shotgun anywhere, from a hunting store or gun shop to a pawn shop. When I lived in Detroit, most of my neighbors had them.

18. nor do you need to be sane, stable or cognitive
I'm actually quite liberal about owning guns but there does not seem to be any logic or reason to how we allow the purchase of such a powerful device. and, yeah, if a person with criminal intent wanted a gun he'll find a way to get one just like a crack addict finds his crack.(not saying guns are like crack) but, to me anyway, it seems that there is intention to the miriad of unenforced or toothless gun laws. One side can bloviate that there are thousands of "gun Laws" that aren't even enforced so no new laws are needed against the other side screaming that existing gun laws are worthless since they neither reduce or deter gun violence. This is what Moore tried to explore in Bowling for Colombine, in Canada there are as many if not more guns per capita but like 1% the gun violence. There is alot about America's culture that breeds the notion, solutions can be found at the end of a gun.

5. One dead, two wounded
The guy who did the shooting apparently escaped the building.

Hopefully he'll turn that gun on himself and save the people of Michigan a lot of expense.

I-75? Probably not the best road to take if you're trying to get lost in Michigan's vast area called "up north".

10. 9-months pregnant woman shoots armed roober
A woman who pretended to have a gun while trying to rob a convenience store on St. Paul's East Side was shot by the store owner's pregnant wife.

A family member identified the clerk as Susana Khalil. She does not normally tend the Super USA store, owned by her husband Joseph Kalil. But her husband's cousin, George Elbassar, says Joseph ran out to do an errand Saturday evening, leaving Susana and their 2-year-old daughter on their own.

Police say that's when a woman, acting as if she had a gun inside a paper bag, tried to rob the store.

"She came behind the counter and tussled with Susana, who's 9 months pregnant," Elbassar said.

Elbassar said Susana was forced to use a gun her husband kept behind the counter.

"She did what she had to do to protect her kid and the kid in her stomach too," Elbassar said.

The robbery suspect was shot near the collarbone and was in stable condition at Regions Hospital Saturday night. Police have not released her name.

Exactly what I want, the way it should be... the honest people are armed and the criminals aren't.

17. I work about 500 feet away
I had taken the day off. So I was quite shocked to see that the local area where I worked was on a national news feed on CNN. People that were at work said they locked down our building and wouldn't let anyone leave for about 2 hours. They said it was kinda surreal. We can see the building the tragedy was involved in, from our front window.
