Heads Up! Levin Is Running, Again
I received this email today:

It's always a big decision. But this time, it wasn't even close.

We knew it would take a lot of work to straighten out the mess the Bush Administration will leave behind - to end the war in Iraq, restore America's image in the world, get serious about global climate change, reverse the loss of manufacturing jobs, support stem cell research, and tackle so many other challenges.

The chance to put our country back on the right track and to help the people of Michigan means the world to Carl. So when we sat down to talk about whether Carl would run for reelection, I knew immediately what he should do and what he wanted to do - and he promptly announced his decision to run.

Every day I see the purpose and passion Carl brings to his work. We're going to bring the same sense of purpose and passion to this reelection campaign. The qualities that make Carl so effective also make him a thorn in the side of his political opponents. They would like nothing better than to defeat him. Carl is going to need the resources to run a top-notch campaign and withstand the negative attacks that seem to be part of every political campaign these days.

We are going to give our all to this campaign. I hope you will join us and make a contribution today to show Carl he made the right decision.

With a strong and early statement of support for Carl, you can help discourage top Republican challengers from even getting in the race. That's a good investment for all of us, since it will make the campaign easier down the road. And it's a goal that has special importance to me because it will mean Carl can spend less time raising money and more time with his family!

The truth is that even though it takes so much of his time and energy, I have always been deeply proud of Carl's public service. He always does what he believes is right, regardless of the consequences. And so many times it turns out he was right. For example, he was one of only 23 Senators that voted against attacking Iraq in October, 2002. He saw it would unleash forces that would make us less secure.

Our five perfect grandchildren are too young to understand what their grandfather does all day, what's in that big briefcase he brings home every night (no matter what time he gets home!), or why he has to "chitter chatter," as one of our grandchildren put it, with people who come up to him when he is with her in public. But some day they'll know - he did it all for them.

If you share my belief that Carl's work is building a brighter future for the next generation, I hope you will make a contribution to his campaign today.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Barbara Levin

MY PERSONAL OPINION--CARL SHOULD RETIRE, AND LET SOMEONE WHO CAN KEEP MOUTH AND ACTIONS IN SYCHRONICITY REPRESENT OUR STATE.

1. How has he failed to "Keep mouth and actions in synchronicity?"

Not to say I’m not disappointed with a couple of his recent votes. But he has been quite a vocal opponent of the war since the beginning, and is considered one of the leading foreign-policy experts in the US Senate.

I called his office regarding his opposition to Feingold-Reid (which was an amendment to a water resources bill), and the aide promised he was still just as committed to ending the war, but didn't want the water resources bill vetoed just b/c of the amendment.

Other than that, though, he's been an excellent Senator, and I don't know of anyone who'd be better in that job.

(BTW: He actually announced several months ago.)

2. I'm with you
No one is going to vote the way we want 100% of the time. He voted against the war in the first place and I know he wants it to end.

3. Go after Knollenberg
You want someone to go after, go after Joe Knollenberg. Any energy wasted on going after Carl is just that, wasted energy.

4. That's my plan.
I'll be working against him again this time. Not my district, but Sandy is safe, despite his latest vote.

5. Are you serious?
Yeah, let's find someone new! Instead of running the unbeatable Carl Levin, and the Rethugs being reduced to running a sacrificial lamb, let's get someone brand spanking new that the Rethugs can bury by dumping a boatload of cash into the race.

I never cease to be amazed at the cluelessness on DU.

6. I'm so with you, Julie
Carl is unbeatable. I may not agree with him 100% of the time, but for the most part, he's been a great senator and I'm happy to have him for another term.
