"Although Nancy Skinner ran as the Democrat in this race in 2006 and after she showed that the incumbent Joe Knollenberg was vulnerable by coming within 6 points of him (his closest race in 14 years), the traditional Democratic machine became interested in the District. They didn't give Skinner a cent or even any help in her race and have since complained that she wasn't good at fundraising. She was outspent by 3 to 1, but still came closer to winning than any democrat in the district. (I'm not endorsing Skinner, I'm just setting up the background here.)"
