Everyone digging out okay?
The kids have a snow day, and we got decent snow here in Battle Creek. How's everyone in the Detroit area?

1. Jackson area here. LOTS of snow ...
My husband shoveled yesterday and is out there again today so that we can get to work this afternoon. I think it looks like we got somewhere around 8 inches or more (?)

Yesterday morning ..

keep warm :)

3. That looks like my back deck, too.
Here's the front yard:

Here's the back deck:

The kids are out trying to build a snow fort right now, since they had a snow day today. Too bad it's so powdery.

2. We only got about 4" in our area
I'm in Huntington Woods, near Royal Oak. I work in Southfield and when I got to work this morning, it seems like there might have been a little more than that here, but it still wasn't too bad.

Someone I work with who lives in Clarkston said they got about 15-16". It's amazing how different the accumulation has been in different areas.

4. I just spoke to someone who lives in Royal Oak
and it sounds like she got a lot more snow than we did -- only about a mile and a half away. And she lost power, phone and Internet service. Power is back on, but the toobz are still out.

5. It's awfully cold to lose power today.
My heat just cycled on, and boy, am I grateful. I have two sick kids home from school, and the last thing I'd need right now would be to lose heat. Ugh.

6. She's got her power back.
She was at her parents' in Bloomfield over New Year's, so she's okay.

7. Just a dusting here.
Drove back from Cadillac yesterday in a "snowglobe" effect, though!

We didn't even have to shovel this morning.

Weird.

8. 7" W.Det. Not as bad as all the DU "..only candidate.." snow posts.
Plow knocked 2 1/2 foot boulders into the driveway. I machined them into pulverized roadbed before bed-dy-bye.

I love that crunch sound as I back over crispy snow onward into the street in frosty cold pre-dawn quiet.

Drove to Flint from 530-7AM. Pretty clear. Some left-lane drifting. Only two ditched cars that I saw -- both had help.

If only the snow jobs falling from candidates' helpers were so easily put into useful places.

10. 10.5" at my house in Ann Arbor
But, funny, Ypsi only had about 4 inches. We must have been right on the border of the heavy and light snow.

It's one of the prettiest snowfalls I've ever seen, though. And so lucky it fell on a holiday so we had all day to dig out. It didn't take very long and the plow came down my street before noon which surprised me since it was a holiday and usually it takes them until the end of the day or the next morning. Maybe because the traffic was so light (everyone holed up watching the bowl game) the main roads didn't take as long as usual.

A2 schools don't reopen until Monday so the kids here didn't get a snow day.

13. About 4-5" of heavy, wet snow here in northern Royal Oak - still coating branches.

I detest snow. :grr: Water should be clear and wet. :grr:

I'm located in a heavily-treed area. When I was a toddler, this area was woods where my uncles hunted pheasant. When they built houses in here in the 50s, they left many of the trees - every lot has at least 2-3 trees. There are enough trees that the horizon is unviewable in any direction - a "green wall" in the summer.

I made two morning forays out into the *B*R*R*R* with shovel in hand - cleared front and back porches and walkways. Then my neighbor showed up with his Toro and cleared the rest. (God Bless him.)

Lest anyone misunderstand ... I detest snow. :grr:

14. I love snow, but the bitter cold's getting to me.
For some reason, it just feels much colder to me this year.

And I've got shovelling to do today--more fell last night. *sigh*

15. "lake effect"
As a former resident of Rochester, NY, for 9 years, those are words to chill the heart and ache the back. The last winter I spent in Rochester saw snow depths that buried the fence and made it impossible to see traffic when backing out of the driveway for more than two months. The snow was so deep that I literally had to throw it above my own head (I'm 6'2") when shoveling the drive and walkways. I was living in Silicon Valley by the next winter ... and kissing the ground daily for the blessings of living there.

17. I'm always amazed at the snow Rochester gets.
I mean, the UP gets dumped, but Rochester's just plain crazy. Me, I would start building tunnels.
