7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Where do I vote?

At your regular polling place. If you're a first-time voter, or don't remember, call your city
or township clerk, or go to www.michigan.gov/sos and look for the Michigan Voter Information Center.
That will show you your polling place and verify that you're registered.
You can also get directions to the polling site, and see a sample ballot for your community.


Who can vote?

Anyone who is a registered Michigan voter.


Can I still get an absentee ballot?

Yes, until 4 p.m. Monday.


Do I need ID to vote?

Yes. If you have photo identification, bring it.
If not, you will be asked to sign a document attesting to that.


Do I have to say what party I favor?

You will have to request a Democratic ballot or a Republican ballot.


But won't people know what party I voted for in the future?

Lists will be kept by the state Republican and Democratic parties.


If I usually vote for one party, can I vote for the other one this time?

Yes. And if you are an independent, you too can choose which party to vote for.


I'm a Democrat and I hear that not all the candidates are on my ballot.

That's right. The candidates on the Democratic ballot are
Hillary Clinton, Dennis Kucinich, Mike Gravel, Uncommitted and Christopher Dodd
(Dodd has dropped out, but he did so too late to get his name off Michigan's ballot).


Why?

Other candidates, including Barack Obama and John Edwards, deferred to the National Democratic
Party's determination that Michigan improperly jumped ahead of other states on the calendar
by scheduling its primary Jan. 15. So they withdrew from the Michigan ballot.


I see a place for write-ins on the ballot. Can I write in a name, if a candidate isn't on the ballot?

No. If you do, it won't be counted. Michigan law requires candidates to declare if they wish to be write-in candidates, and none did.


What does it mean if I vote "uncommitted?"

If enough people vote the same way, Michigan will send delegates to the national convention who aren't obliged to vote for a particular candidate. They can vote for whomever they wish.


I'm a Republican and I don't like my choices. But if I still vote in my primary, can I vote uncommitted, too?

Yes. It's an option on both primary ballots.


Is there anything else on the ballot, besides the presidential primary?

In some communities, yes. Go to the Elections division of the state Secretary of State's Web
site, www.michigan.gov/sos, and look for the section marked "Special Elections on Jan. 15, 2008
by county."
