Michigan GOP finds itself in debt

$240,000 deficit, fundraising difficulties threaten party's ability to compete in fall

Gordon Trowbridge / Detroit News Washington Bureau

Michigan Republican activists are worried that their state party, heading into an intensive and expensive 2008 campaign, is in debt and failing to raise the money it needs to be competitive this fall.

The combination of a $240,000 debt and a harsh fundraising environment for Republicans is expected to be the topic of debate this weekend, when the state GOP's budget and central committees meet in Lansing.

"Basically, we're close to a quarter of a million dollars in debt, and this should be a time we're raising money and not spending it," said Bill Beddoes of Allen Park, the party's 14th Congressional District chairman. "It's very disturbing."

The financial picture could be key to a list of crucial races up and down the ticket -- from the presidential race in what is expected to be a battleground state, to GOP hopes of recapturing control of the Michigan House.

2. The Michigan GOP leaders are lightweights
The Michigan GOP leaders are lightweights compared to Bush. Their deficit is chump change compared to his.

4. imho, MI GOPers may soon be totally dependent on the largesse of DeVos and company.
I haven't yet figured out whether that's bad or good.

5. MIchigan GOP
I have been a MI resident for 9 years. I have seen this evolution of the GOP move into the debt column because of their inability to manage and believe that, even in Michigan, it’s just not about religion guns and money. It is no surprise that the majority of the State believes that the Devos party can save them. Let me tell you they are so bad in this state they couldn't even buy the election against Granholm. People in this state need to believe in what the current administration is doing. Because the Republicans are not about jobs they are about self sustaining millionaires. I still can't believe when I drive down 94 and see a Bush bumper sticker on a rusted out beater. I am sure all the Repubs are working for them. I hope MI wakes up soon and realizes that education is the way out of this recession. MI needs to move away from the car industry propaganda that it is the sole God that will deliver them to the Promised Land. MI has fine universities that need to be pumped to deliver graduates that will move MI to the next generation of jobs and job creation.

6. Can't manage a federal budget, can't manage a state political budget.
Republicans can't balance any budget without a trust fund.
