The beginning of the end has started for old Tiger Stadium.
Wrecking crews tore the first in hole late Monday morning in the wall behind what used to be bleachers, on the Fisher West service drive near the intersection of Trumbull Avenue.
The joint venture construction group of Ferrow Group Inc. and MCM Management Corp. got the green light to being tearing down the historic stadium late last week, when permits were officially granted to allow partial demolition.
All the work is taking place between Trumbull and Cochrane along the service drive. The area still is being fenced off.
The Tiger Stadium Conservancy Group continues to try to raise enough money to save the stadium's baseball diamond and dugout area. The group has an Aug. 1 deadline to prove it has a feasible business plan to develop those remnants -- perhaps as a sports museum -- and to show it can raise $12 million to $15 million. Otherwise, the entire stadium will be demolished, and the city will seek development proposals for the cleared land.
