the state of Michigan discriminates against US born women!
I went to get my Michigan driver's license today and was told I need my marriage license to show why the name on my birth certificate is different than the name on my VA license and my SS card! I was born in VA, married in FL, divorced, married in RI, divorced, married in CA..the I would be forced to purchase from each state my marriage certificate to prove that my maiden name is indeed my maiden name...since I have not used my maiden name since I was married in FL when I was 19..so my other certificates have my married name (my legal name at the time and not my birth name!)..CA states it is so far behind it could take UP TO 6 MONTHS..AND since I was divorced over 25 years ago...I don't even remember when I was married!!!

If I were NOT born in the US I could use other state documents (not my birth certificate) that DO NOT REQUIRE A MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM 40 YEARS, 35 YEARS AGO AND 25 YEARS AGO!!!

1. you need to change your name on your Social Security Card
i did that first, and had no problems changing my drivers license and credit cards.

you aren't being discriminated against.

2. my social security card matches my drivers license..what is different
is my birth certificate has my birth name..and not my married name..and they want me to prove how my name went from my birth name to the names on my license and social security card..IT IS DISCRIMINATION BECAUSE MEN ARE NOT FORCED TO CHANGE THEIR NAMES AFTER MARRIAGE..I HAD NO CHOICE 40 YEARS AGO, 35 YEARS AGO AND 25 YEARS AGO..times have changed..and if I were 19 today..I would retain my maiden name.

3. women were NEVER FORCED to change their names
you bowed to social pressure, but there is no law, not even 40 years ago, that women had to change their name.

4. 40 years ago signing the marriage certificate automatically changed your name to his
and for it not to become his I would have to have a name change back to my maiden name. It was automatic upon marriage. The marrying powers sent to all the legal entities our marriage license and my name was changed. My social security card bore his name. The only marriage that was not registered with the IRS/Social Security was my 3rd and had to have my SS card name changed about 5 years ago...from my previous married name.

5. Tangerine LaBamba has answered this in your other thread....
only one state ever required women to change their names upon marriage.

what name did you use when you signed the certificate? if you signed your birth name, then that's what your name would be.
