I think amending the city charter so they aren't legally bound to put public notices in the newspaper makes sense. We don't HAVE a newspaper, we don't know when or if we're going to get one. Maybe we will someday but right now we need an authorized vehicle and the city website makes sense; it's free, open to anyone, and easy to navigate.
And I got fed to the teeth with the robo-calls telling me to vote no, especially since the cowards wouldn't identify themselves; they were all PRIVATE CALLER or CALLER UNKNOWN. I found out later they were financed by some newspaper organization. I work in the media and I'm all for newspapers but I think this is the wrong issue for them to go all out on. The lost classified revenue just doesn't justify it.
Re: the millage. Funding for our public education has been a disaster since Proposal A passed. Every district is in trouble. Quality of life in any area depends on the quality of the public schools. If we want Washtenaw County to remain vibrant we MUST have strong public education. I don't have kids of my own but that doesn't matter. The property tax increase isn't huge and it can also be deducted from federal taxes. We need to maintain our quality of life in Washtenaw County and we can do that through funding public education.
