Michigan’s roads are second worst in nationBY MATT HELMS

Buzz up!Michigan’s roads are second worst among the states – at least according to truckers who drive them for a living.
A survey by the magazine Overdrive, which calls itself the voice of the American trucker, found Michigan behind only Pennsylvania for bad roads, as rated by owner-operator truckers this year. New York and California tied for third, which was the spot Michigan held last year in the magazine’s annual survey.
The Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association used the February study as more ammunition in the battle to increase road funding in Michigan. The group noted that declines in revenues from gas taxes and vehicle registrations will force the state to lose $500 million in federal funding because Michigan won’t raise enough money to meet matching requirements. That drop has forced the state to chop more than 250 projects from MDOT’s five-year plan for roadwork through 2014.
MITA warned that Michigan risks its pavement conditions declining from 90% good this year to 50% good by 2020.
Lawmakers are considering measures including raising fuel taxes but face a tough fight given the state’s economy.
