GRAND RAPIDS -- When kids "ooh and aah" over Sunday night's Downtown Family Fireworks at Ah Nab Awen Park, will they be watching their education dollars going up in smoke?

That's what the Mackinac Center for Public Policy and a Detroit-area state legislator are saying.

They are critical of the state Lottery Commission's $40,000 co-sponsorship of Grand Rapids Fourth of July fireworks display.

"Maybe the Fourth of July star shells purchased with lottery funds will spell out some of the Algebra I lesson high school students are supposed to learn these days," said Jack McHugh, a senior legislative analyst with the Midland-based free market think tank.

Michigan schools are suffering, yet the lottery $$$$$ (which is supposed to go for schools) is blown!!! Why didn't the super-wealthy DeVos' and Prince's donate the money???
