Anyone here live in central Detroit?
I'm wondering if it is as cheap to buy a house as I've heard.

1. It is CHEAPER than you've heard.
And usually too dangerous.

Here is a neighborhood where you
can buy a mansion pretty cheaply,
but you will pour money into it.
This area is pretty safe:

There are not many HOUSES in "central Detroit".

Lots of affordable lofts in the city's center area though.

The housing stock on the edges of "central Detroit"
is cheap, but you wouldn't want to live there
if you could afford anything else.

2. "And usually too dangerous"

That's way overstated. Central Detroit, particularly if you're talking downtown-Cultural Center-New Center, is not dangerous and the population is growing. And thousands of people manage to live on the edges of Central Detroit without getting shot. I hate rash generalizations.

3. If they buy a "house" in "Central Detroit" ...
for CHEAP, then I wouldn't want to raise children
there if I could help it.

There are areas in "central Detroit" where you
can have a nice apartment, condo, or loft, but
it will not be as "cheap as she/he has heard".

What specific "neighborhood" in "Central Detroit"
are you referring to that has unbelievably cheap "house"
prices ($1000 or so, that he/she has "heard of")
that would be safe neighborhoods in "central Detroit"?

4. so what is your evidence that it is dangerous?
besides the fact that it is AfricanAmerican, and most people assume a neighborhood that is AfricanAmerican is high in crime?

Gotta love liberals. :)

5. and please don't tell me that I wouldn't want to live there.
You don't know where I would want to live.
I live in an AfricanAmerican neighborhood right now by choice.

6. Whatever. I just live here. Buy a thousand dollar house in "central detroit"
and live in it.

As I've tried to say, there ARE NO HOUSES in "central Detroit",
just apartments, condo's and lofts.

If you want to buy a HOUSE for a thousand dollars,
you will be buying in a crime-ridden area.

You can live in Cork Town, Indian Village,
the few blocks where the Manoogian Mansion
and parts of the New Center area and the
Medical District.

That's about it, and those houses are not cheap.

Both of my brothers live in pretty dangerous areas
of the city, the parks within walking distance are
NOT safe, and B&E's are rampant.
