LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Mark Brewer announced Thursday that he's running for his old job as Michigan Democratic Party chairman, this time with the backing of Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
Two years ago, Brewer had to give up the chairman position for a shared-power arrangement that left him in charge of the party's day-to-day operations but installed Melvin "Butch" Hollowell as party chairman.
Granholm was instrumental in wresting the leadership post away from Brewer in favor of Hollowell, a Detroit lawyer and close personal friend. Two years later, her tune has changed.
"Mark has clearly demonstrated that he is effective and brilliant and loyal -- and passionately committed to the Democratic Party," Granholm said in a release. "I am wholeheartedly behind his candidacy and I look forward to working with him as we expand the party, reach out to younger voters, and energize our Democratic family."
