Nancy Skinner expected to attend SE MI DU meetup
Edited on Sat Jul-08-06 03:12 PM by SharonRB
Hi, all you Michiganders (Michiganians?)!

I spoke to Nancy Skinner today and she has agreed to attend a SE MI DU meetup, as long as nothing comes up that she absolutely can't get out of that afternoon. She most likely will not be able to stay for the whole afternoon, but she will come for at least a while, with the previous caveat.

The date for the DU meetup will be Saturday afternoon, August 5 -- from noon to whenever. The exact location is yet to be determined, however, we will hold it in a park, most likely in the Plymouth/Livonia area so it will be centrally located for those coming from Ann Arbor, etc. If anyone in that area has suggestions, please post them. Blue4barb, I'll take you up on your offer to scout (I'll PM you my phone number). (Nancy's finance director, who lives in Plymouth, suggested Hines Park.)

I think the easiest thing would be for people to bring their own picnic food, drinks, etc., or, if they want to, dishes to share. Let's make this as easy as possible for people.

Also, please feel free to bring spouses and kids.

Anyone have any other thoughts? Please spread the word around to other DUers who may not read in this forum. Let's try for a big turnout and show our statewide support for Nancy.

1. I wouldn't be able to make Plymouth.
:( Hopefully, we'll be able to do something sometime soon, closer to home for me with Dad and all. :hi:

Sorry I'm going to miss this one out. It sounds like fun. :hi:

3. He's doing really well, thanks!

We just got him a kitten. :) He'll be staying with us for a bit yet I think.

:hi: If we can sometime get something that would be a little bit closer for Eastsiders I'm there!

4. I didn't realize he was staying with you.
I understand why you can't be away that long. If things change by a month from now, I hope you can come. We picked that part of town so people from Ann Arbor, etc. could come. It's really not that much farther from you than it is from me, but under the circumstances, I certainly understand.

If you want to try to set something else up on your side of town when things calm down, let me know. Or if we can just work out something small so we can see you guys, let me know that, too.

You continue to be in my thoughts for a speedy recovery for your dad.

5. Thanks so much!

Plymouth is the end of the world for me as an appraiser. It always seems to take so much longer to get there then Northern Oakland and Lapeer for some reason.

6. Seems to me that the western end of the 9th CD would be an apt location.
Edited on Sun Jul-09-06 11:34 AM by TahitiNut
Farmington or Farmington Hills? (I'm assuming that Livonia and Plymouth aren't in the 9th.)

It would be a bitter irony to choose such a location and then not have folks from Ann Arbor *OR* eastern Oakland County in attendance. (Yes. I'd certainly want to make it convenient for MrsG.)

7. I think Farmington or Farmington Hills would be a good
compromise, actually, and they are in the 9th district, which would be apropos with Nancy coming. Livonia and Plymouth are in Wayne County. That area would only be slightly farther from Ann Arbor than Livonia would be -- maybe 10 minute or so, I think, maybe even less on the freeway.

Good idea, Tahiti!

And we could tell people to invite their friends who live in the 9th who might want to meet Nancy who might not be DUers.

8. Heritage Park between 10 and 11 Mile Roads, west of Farmington Road
... was a popular family picnic spot back in the "Dark Ages" when I went to high school in Farmington. I haven't been there for decades. It's fairly convenient to the I-696 offramp at Orchard Lake Road. Alternatively, Shiawassee Park which is adjacent to (walking distance from) downtown Farmington might be OK ... but is quite popular for local organized sports and may be crowded on a Saturday afternoon.

There's a Bar/Restaurant ("Cawley's"?) in downtown Farmington that could be a "in case of rain" alternative indoor venue. The upstairs is casual and comfortable ... with big-screen TVs.

9. LOL -- hubby suggested Heritage Park as well
I've been there, and it's a really nice park. Since it's larger, it may be a better choice than Shiawassee Park.

11. Blue4barb is going to check out Heritage tomorrow
She'll find out if we need a reservation for a spot, have to pay any kind of fee, etc., as well as scout out a spot that will be easy to tell people how to find us.

I think we're on our way! Now we just need to get people to commit to show up.

Cool beans if that turns out to be the place, both Livonia or Plymouth OK too.

Northville Road and Six Mile in Northville, central to Plymouth and Livonia. It is just a mile west of Haggerty Road and easy on off access to 96. (Very close to Hines Drive.)

On edit:

I used to live in the U.P. (married a Yooper) and it was a 110 mile ROUND trip just take my kids for a treat to McDonald's or shop at a major chain store. So I'm just kind of laughing here at the comments that Plymouth or Livonia is at the "end of the world." I moved down here 8 years ago and commuted from Novi to Bloomfield Hills for a year (got to know all the 'around the construction' routes) and realized that although it was only 20 miles from my doorstep to my work parking lot, it took me 1 1/2 hours per day each way. Now I work in Ann Arbor and live 10 miles away, what a difference. But I find that I don't want to jump in my car and drive 10 miles for something if I don't absolutely have to.

You could call me on my cell when you get off the air -- I have a feeling we'll be there later than that. I had really hoped you and MisU could be there.

21. Waste of Nancy's Time.
If Skinner is going to win this thing, she needs to spend more time talking to undecided, persuadable voters, and not hard voting Democrats at meet-ups. Unless this meet-up is after hours instead of when Nancy can be talking to voters, it's a waste of her most precious resource, time. When she loses, she can look back at all the time she spent talking to people who were already going to vote for her and count the lost votes.

I guess it sounds good on a message board to take superficial pot-shots, though.
