August 8 primary countdown thread!

We have less than three weeks to go until the August primary.

The big primary is the one for US Senate, where the GOP is forced to choose between someone with a French surname and a black person. :evilgrin:

You may be thinking "Let's be the decider... let's decide their nominee for them!" Sounds like a good idea... unless you ‘split your ticket.’ If you vote in the GOP US Senate primary and the Dem state House primary where you live, your ballot will be thrown out.

So my advice to all of you: if you don’t have any competitive Dem primaries where you live - or if any Dem primaries are for races where the Dem nominee has at best a slim chance of winning in November - vote in the GOP primary.

My plan as of now (it could change): In Kent County, we have six Republicans and a Democrat running for Drain Commissioner, the winner of which is almost guaranteed to win the general election. There’s a 2-way Dem primary for Congress, but the GOP incumbent (Ehlers) usually wins easily. So I’m gonna vote the Repub side of the ballot.

Since Bouchard is expected to get the GOP nod, I plan on voting for Butler. I will likely write in Louis Boven for Governor so as to protest DeVos (Boven mounted a campaign but failed to qualify for the ballot). I will probably also write in the name of a 2002 Repub state house candidate - someone who lost the primary to jack@$$ Glenn Steil, Jr. (who voted against the minimum wage increase).

If there's at least one competitive Dem primary where you live where the Dem nominee could - or for sure will - win, do vote in the Democratic primary.

3. Isn't it funny when the repubs complain about Conyers, yet Ehlers

Has been in office for at least 20 years. When I was a kid in GR, it was Sawyer. My mom hated him because she wrote him a letter once, signed her name, and his office responded with a letter to my dad. Then it was Paul Henry, for a few years, and when he died, Ehlers became the congressman.

I'm thinking of voting for Keith Butler in the GOP primary, just because I think Stabenow will beat him more easily than Bouchard. Unfortunately, my reasoning is based on knowing the racism that is prevalent among Michigan GOP and swing voters, who will vote for no one over a black man.

I personally think Bouchard is not a bad guy, for a republican. Keith Butler, on the other hand, is not a good man. He is a pastor of a very cultish church (they have their own special name to pray to Jesus under, seating inside is assigned by how much money you give, etc). He also gets paid about 1 million a year for it, and half his family is on the church's payroll. The only Detroiters who can stand him are the ones who go to his church.

Actually, Ehlers was elected in 1993 in a special election after Henry's death.

I, personally, don't believe in crossing over. I don't like when the Repubs do it to us, so I don't do it to them.
