State party convention 8/26-27 (Sat.&Sun.) at Cobo Hall
Anyone planning to go? I've never gone to one of these and would love to attend. I just checked out some info on Stabenow's site. It sounded like all are welcome, but if you want to vote for candidates for Attorney General, Supreme Court, and some others, you have to have been a paid member of the party for at least 30 days. I've never actually paid dues to the party, so I just joined on-line, since the last day for joining in order to be able to vote at the convention is quickly approaching.

It would be fun to have a DU contingent there.

1. My mother is always a delegate
She was a Kerry delegate in Boston in 2004 (but refused to wear a funny hat so I could never find her on TV). She will be representing two DUers, me and my sister, also known as Lisa M.

Our father is often a delegate too.

2. Delegate?
At the state party convention? That sounds like it was the Democratic National Convention. I would so love some day to be a delegate at the national convention. I'm starting small by going to the state convention. Sounds like livvy and I are going to go.

I didn't know LisaM was your sister!

I hope to meet you at the meetup. Does your sister live in the state? If so, bring her to the meetup!

5. I'd like to be a national convention delegate too!

And maybe even a presidential elector!

How do they determine who will go to the National Convention?

IIRC, it involves primary candidates. Every Dem candidate who gets over 10% or 15% of the caucus vote is allocated a share of the state's at-large delegates, and everyone who breaks that threshold in each congressional district gets a share of that district's 5 or 6 votes.

But who gets to decide exactly who goes?

10. My mother always goes to State convention
and was also a national delegate in 2004. I should've made that more clear....

Lisa M lives in Seattle so she can't make the get-together (although I'm meeting her in Boston the next weekend). Her next trip to Michigan is for the Michigan-Vanderbilt game in September. We hope to get together with progmom and misunderestimator -- maybe you can come out to A2 too!

3. Make sure youre an MDP member!
For voting rights at the convention make sure you are a Michigan Democratic Party member by July 27th. The cheapest memberships are just $5, and you get a MDP Card.

6. I think that's a student membership, Jordan
The least expensive regular membership is $15, I believe. I joined online last night for $30.

8. You should attend a caucus or two while your are there
The Justice Caucus comes highly recommended. Also you should attend your Congressional District Caucus.

9. Thanks for the advice.
Does one have to be invited or can you pick which ones you want to attend? Is there a charge for attending the convention and, if so, how much is it?

12. convention details
It's free.. and if you're an MDP member, you should get a program in the mail, which has the whole schedule of all the caucuses and events. It'll be posted there as well. Everyone is welcome, but you can only vote if you're a Precinct Delegate and/or a MDP 30-day member. Usually the caucuses meet in the morning, and the actual convention starts at like 1.

Bring some money though, because there will be all kinds of vendors there selling Dem paraphrenalia. It's buttons and t-shirts galore. Also you may want to bring snacks, cause it's a looooong day.

16. Justice Caucus endorses Amos Williams for Attorney General
July 24, 2006

As you should remember from our June 21st announcement, Attorney Amos Williams was enthusiastically endorsed by the Justice Caucus Board of Directors "Without a dissenting vote".
http://www.justicecaucus.org/features/amoswilliamsendorsement.htm

There is now a straw poll available on MichiganLiberal.com at the following address:
http://www.michiganliberal.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=6057

Amos Williams is the candidate for Attorney General who will help the Democratic ticket the most. We urge you to vote in this Straw Poll on MichiganLiberal.com to help send a message on who should be the party's nominee for Attorney General.

Sincerely,

Paul Stevenson
Administrative Co-Chair

Michael W. Mistak
At-Large Board Member / e-Outreach Director

17. Amos Williams=Electoral Disaster
Thats not true. Amos Williams has no chance of winning the general election. His record is a disaster that Cox and the Republicans with hang him with.

I've met him a couple of times and I think his qualifications are excellent. He's also a really nice man at a personal level.
