Supreme Court, Board of Education, and University boards

Here are the candidates up for re-election on the state Supreme Court, Board of Education, and university governing boards. I don't know who exactly is running for re-election, and I don't know the names of everyone else who is planning to run.

Remember that nominees are chosen at the state convention.

State Supreme Court: Michael Cavanagh (D), Maura Corrigan (R)
Other candidates: Former state rep. Marc Shulman (R)

State Board of Education: Reginald Turner (D), Eileen Weiser (R)

U-M Board of Regents: David Brandon (R), Kathy White (D)
Other candidates: Democratic activists Julia Darlow and Casandra Ulbrich

MSU Board of Trustees: Dolores Cook (R), David Porteous (R)

Wayne State Board of Governors: Eugene Driker (D), Elizabeth Hardy (R)

Thoughts on who you’d like to see nominated?

Personally, I’d prefer to see Amos Williams get the nod for AG, but it’s close in my mind. Bowen would also do well. Given Bowen's judicial experience (albeit limited), I would like to see him run for the Court. Yeah, he's anti-choice, but he's still far better than many of those currently on the Court.

For U-M regent, in addition to Kathy White, I also support Julia Darlow. She was the first woman to become president of the State Bar, and has a tremendous record of working for Democratic Party causes and for womens' ancivil rights. Plus, I hope Phil Thompson runs for MSU Trustee and Herbert Moyer runs for Board of Education. They each lost heartbreakers in 2004.

Incidentally, we elect U-M, MSU, ad WSU's governing boards, but the governor appoints the others. Does anyone know why this is the case? (I mean, electing 15 schools' boards of trustees would be confusing, but why do we elect those three?)

2. Tell me about Amos Williams, I haven't heard of him before

There's no way in hell I will ever cast a vote for Maura Corrigan, she's just a shill for the insurance industry. I was surprised that Bush nominated Harriet Myers instead Corrigan to the USSC, though. Corrigan does have a great deal of experience.

I'm open to any dem as AG, as long as he or she is not corrupt. Although if a republican has to be in the job, it might as well be Cox. Somebody dem has the dirt on him or he would have never have whitewashed the infamous stripper party investigation.

I checked with a buddy of mine who is knowledgeable about such stuff and here's what he had to say:

State constitution sets it up this way. So it is constitutionally required. I have been told that a deal was cut at the 1962 constitutional convention to do this as part of some other deal cut at same.

6. I like Denise Illitch a lot

She appears on that Sunday morning round table talk show (ch 7?). She's definately a good one to have on our side. I would love to see her oust Tom Monaghan's field general, David Brandon. I'm sure Monaghan plans to fund a Brandon run for Senate or Governor one day.
