SEPTEMBER 21 commUnity forUm:
"Creating a Culture of Nonviolence Among Youth"
The Universalist Unitarian Church of East Liberty (UUCEL), the Jackson Interfaith Peacekeepers, and the Jackson District Library announce the Thursday, September 21 commUnity forUm, "Creating a Culture of Nonviolence Among Youth." Ted Miller of Jackson Community College and the Peacekeepers organization will moderate this discussion, with Scott Schmidt of United Way's Full Circle program, Lee Hampton, Jackson Community College, and Cathy Brechtelsbauer, Jackson Human Relations Commission, presenting on the panel. Representatives of the City of Jackson Police and Recreation Departments, Jackson Public Schools, clergy and youth have also been invited to participate in the panel. This forUm coincides with the International Day of Peace, September 21.
From September 18 through 27, a powerful exhibit entitled "Building a Culture of Peace for the Children of the World" will be on display in the auditorium of Jackson's downtown Carnegie Library. The public is invited to come at 5:30pm on September 21 to view the exhibit before the forUm.
"Conflict and confrontation feature prominently in our culture, so when someone bugs us we may respond with hostility without thinking twice," said Ted Miller. "But there is another option: nonviolence. To the extent that people in our community, particularly youth, learn to resolve differences through nonviolent means-such as through dialogue-our culture itself will be transformed. Jackson Interfaith Peacekeepers wanted to bring the issue of violence to the forefront in our community in conjunction with the International Day of Peace. The forUm provides an excellent opportunity to bring together many people concerned about it, for dialogue."
CommUnity forUms are free and open programs to facilitate dialogue about the challenging issues of our time. They are held at Jackson District Library, 244 W. Michigan Ave., between Blackstone and N. Jackson streets, in downtown Jackson from 6:30-8:30pm. The Fall commUnity forUm schedule will be announced at the September 21 event.
