Rochelle is too kind. She doesn't even mention Betsy's son's ownership of Blackwater USA, a private army for hire.

Remember those charred, dismembered corpses hanging from a bridge in Iraq? They were Blackwater employees.

ROCHELLE RILEY: Don't forget Betsy DeVos

BY ROCHELLE RILEY
FREE PRESS COLUMNIST

November 1, 2006

Remember Betsy DeVos?

She was chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party for two terms, a member of the Republican National Committee and a delegate several times to Republican National Conventions -- all over a 20-year political career.

She was a nationally known Republican strategist who state political observers once thought would someday make a great governor. But she's also a mother of four and wife of a millionaire businessman who himself has aspirations to higher political office, probably the U.S. presidency on the G.W. (Bush) Bill.

So the woman who might have run the state is instead running around the state, a ghost of her former political self, speaking on her husband's behalf as he tries to unseat Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Despite repeated entreaties to speak to me about her own aspirations and the role she would play if her husband is elected next week, three different spokes-people declined an interview on her behalf, including Dick DeVos' spokesman John Truscott, who said Betsy DeVos "doesn't see a role for herself in any policy- or decision-making positions. ... She is fine staying in the background. This race isn't about her at all."

The heck it isn't.

1. Inter-party fighting
Betsy DeVos and John Engler got into it when she was MI GOP chairman. She essentially was fired from her position, because she was angry with Engler for not endorsing the voucher proposal on the ballot a few years back. He knew it wasn't going to pass, and wasn't going to put his name on it.

Interesting thing to note-has anyone seen Big John stumping for Dick? I haven't.

2. Probably under lock and key
Dick DeVos is an extremist, but Besty DeVos makes him look like a moderate. Seeing as Bush has become a campaign pariah, I'd bet that the campaign has Betsy locked up somewhere until the election is over. If she were given an opportunity to speak about her political and social beliefs, she'd scare anyone who wasn't a Dominionist. And, no, I haven't heard or seen anything about Engler supporting Dick either.

6. The same Betsy DeVos who tried to take over the Oakland Co. GOP?
Because they weren't right wing fundamentalist Christian enough for her? The same Betsy DeVos who made her husband run for Governor, because she thought it would give her the power to run the state from behind the scenes? Yeah, where IS she?
