Friends- 1. The Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice (www.mecawi.org) is calling for a demonstration at the State Capitol steps during Governor Granholm’s State of the State address. The demonstration starts at 6 PM on Tuesday, Feb. 6. At a time when Michigan continues to lose jobs, when foreclosures are the highest for the nation, when schools are closing, when hunger and homelessness have not been addressed – the Governor continues to mouth her ridiculous optimism and do nothing. But Michigan’s constitution and laws require the Governor to use her power to declare a state of emergency for economic as well as natural disasters. Under these laws she can stop foreclosures and evictions, end and reverse utility shutoffs and take other action as needed to insure the health and safety of the people of the state. This has been done before and upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court! While we are fighting to get Congress to stop all funds to the Iraq war and use that money right here at home, we can and must demand that the Governor stop the economic disaster afflicting Michigan by using her emergency powers. For transportation from Detroit (leaving 4 PM on Feb. 6) – either car caravans or a bus – reply to this email or call 313-680-5508. We urge all other peace and social justice groups around the state to join us at the State Capitol for the protest. Let us know if you can be there.
2. Southeast Michigan public speak out to tell Congress - “Not a Penny More for the War” on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 PM at Central United Methodist Church (2nd floor).
