Time for another DU Meetup?
I like the idea of tubing on the Cannon River or otherwise having an outdoor activity, but I'm still rediscovering Minnesota at this point, so I'd like input from the rest of you about ideas for an August meetup.

:hi:

1. Let's make it early August
I vote for outside. It's going to be very, very cold soon.

2. ay-yup
Tubing can be fun, if one brings sufficient Tanquery and tonic, already mixed, in a thermos.

Picnic at the Falls?

4. good question
Reminds me that there's a very nice park in downtown Northfield, next to the river. No beach, though.

At Minnehaha, there's the park, shelters, grills and a great path down the rest of the creek to the Mississippi, where there *is* a very nice beach.

5. I vote Minnehaha
mainly because I've been commuting from Rochester to St Paul 3x a week for the past two months, and I'm really sick of seeing the Cannon River (no offense-- it's a beautiful place, but the 2.5 hr drive to and from is really wearing thin).

My schedule is PACKED right now but I'll shoehorn in some time to be at any DU gathering. I'm so glad Lydia and others can plan these things!

:D

13. Swimming and drinking do not mix
Spotty loves a gin and tonic as much or more than the next dog, but swimming and drinking do not mix. Tubing is a form of swimming, or at least it can be unexpectedly. Drink after swimming, liberally if you wish.

16. Cyberia? Is that ethereal?
Funny you should ask. Spotty is from Cakeville, but he exists mostly in Cyberia.

While we're on the subject, and here's a shameless plug, Spotty has a new blog post up this morning about an op-ed in today's Strib about picking Supreme Court justices, written by K. Crockett. Spotty hopes it advances the dialogue, but he thinks it is a fun read anyway. Find it here:

7. Minnehaha Falls is a good place
As I recall, Minneapolis is charging for parking there. I think there's a catered snack bar of some sort. The falls, of course, is nice.

seafood grill. Some of the items sound good. They even offer Raw Oysters (hey, I'm from New Orleans). I didn't try any.
Good raw oysters are goooooooood, but bad oysters can kill you.

I love the Falls, but would prefer something more physical like tubing.
There is a place on the Wisconsin side of Stillwater that has a good tubing river....Apple Creek(?). I went two years ago.

We could do BOTH. Have the DU meetup, and at the Meetup, plan a tubing trip for those who want to for the next weekend.

and...

and...

and at the Tubing Trip, we can plan Rock Clibing for the Next weekend,

10. So let's get a couple dozen people to go tubing!
Tubing could be fun.

Rock-climbing.

What about parasailing?

Or those balloons that go up from the St. Croix?

We could take a cave tour in Stillwater.

We could go on a paddlewheeler dinner or cruise.

Many, many options.

14. Rock climbing? Parasailing?
Bawk-bawk-bawk-bawk-bawk. :scared:

(That's a way of saying that Lydia is chicken in certain respects, especially if those respects involve being at great heights with firm support.)

Tubing. Tubing is more my speed. Tubing keeps you cool.

The classic place for tubing in my day was the Apple River in Wisconsin, but the last I heard, it had been ruined by hosting too many drunken fraternities.

Not.

What happened to tubing?

I think the 12th or 13th would work for me.

28. I wish
That cabin looks yummy.

Instead I'm trying to pack as many hours as possible into my current contract before it runs out.

And the Falls on either the 12th or 13th is fine.

29. If this is to be during the day
then it would have to be the 13th for me, as well as for the other day laborers I'm sure. The 12th in the evening would be okay tho.
