I received six copies of this letter today, which corresponds with the number of letters and petitions I signed against Roberts.
The seventh paragraph worries me. Is that a carefully worded promise that the extremists will continue to dismantle our Democracy?
Dear Ms. xxxx:
Thank you for taking the time to contact me concerning the judicial nomination of Judge John G. Roberts Jr. for service to the United States Supreme Court.
The nomination of a justice to the Supreme Court of the United States is a solemn and momentous occasion. The Founders of the Constitution invested the President with the power to make nominations to the federal judiciary and gave the Senate the role of providing advice and consent with respect to any nominee.
I am pleased that after extensive and unprecedented consultation with the United States Senate, President Bush announced Judge Roberts as his nominee to be the next Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, filling the vacancy left by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
Judge Roberts has a distinguished record, having served as associate counsel to President Ronald Reagan in the White House Counsel's Office and as Principal Deputy Solicitor General in the Department of Justice, before being confirmed unanimously to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in 2003. I believe Judge Roberts is competent and well-qualified and look forward to his confirmation hearings where he will have the opportunity to address any specific questions people may have about his qualifications and fitness, for the office.
Generally, my approach with respect to presidential nominations, whether they be Democrats or Republicans, is to evaluate nominees based on whether they demonstrate competence, appropriate judicial temperament, and a commitment to the fair construction of our Constitution and our laws. The nomination process needs to be fair, including a fair hearing, a floor debate in which all views are heard, and then, an up or down vote on confirmation.
I'm honored by the opportunity the people of Minnesota have given me to examine the President's nominee. I will render a judgment on the President's choice with the values and expectations of Minnesotans in mind.
It is an exciting time for the country to reexamine our Constitutional process and democratic institution, and come together.
Thank you once again for contacting me. I value your advice. If I can be of further assistance to you in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me again.
Sincerely,
Norm Coleman
United States Senate
