November 2nd - Student Walkout, Rally at the U

Just wanted to start spreading the word about this now. If you are a student, or you know any students, pass the word. We are going to begin flyering for it soon. It's going to be big.

Students from high schools all over the Cities are going to be walking out of class, and arriving at Coffman Union at the U at 12 noon, where we are going to have a rally to protest the war and protest recruiters in high schools.

I'm really looking forward to this rally, there is a lot of excitement, and I have been, along with others from the campus anti-war group, energized by attending the rally in DC. I'm personally going to be aiming for the 1,000 mark with this rally, although I'm not sure what others in AWOL (Anti-war organizing league, the campus anti-war group) are hoping for. We're going to be publicizing for a good month ahead of time. After the rally we are going to march down washington avenue to the military recruitment station. I'll share more details with DU as they come, as long as I can share them.

I feel that this is going to be the turning point for campus protests, at least on the U. For the past months, we've been getting like 100 people to come out to protests, but the mood right now is great for anti-war events. Today I passed out a stack of flyers in 10 minutes that would have taken me over an hour to pass out last semester. I would go up to someone and be like "hey, you look like someone who wants to end this FUCKING war" and all of a sudden everybody around me wanted in on the flyers. It was absolutely AMAZING.

Anyway, there is no rule that says you have to be a student to come to the rally, although I realize many people 30+ are intimidated by the energy of campus protests, or simply can't ocme in the afternoon. Although I understand that non-students are obviously not going to be likely to participate in CD, which is a possibility of this coming protest, since they have jobs and families, it would really really be great to see some of you DUers at this thing. I'm giving you over a months notice, call off of work, get someone to watch your kids, do anything, but be there! :bounce:

It's on Washington Avenue, on the east bank of campus, right before you go over the mississippi. I can give much better directions on how to get there if ou let me know where you'd be coming from.

Hubby tells me to leave our 10 y.o. at home if I take off for a protest; he's afraid I'll get arrested and he'll have to pick him up at the cop shop. }(

We will definitely kick ass on campus, and wherever else it needs kicking too! ;-)

the u of m had a pretty strong movement leading up to the war, but it completely fell apart when the war started. things are definitely looking on teh up and up.

8. Minnesota outdid Missouri, from personal experience.

On one of our stops, a bus from MN stopped. They said they had 8 busses coming from the Twin Cities and Duluth. I don't know for sure how many came from MO, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't eight.
My daughter attended the U (out of state tuition sucks), and we both fell in love in love with the campus and the city.
Now get those students out there!

9. i'm pretty sure we were either that bus or a bus associated

because there were 8 buses from our parking lot. We stopped in Indianapolis and Breezewood, PA on the way there. Its such a small world.

Yeah, I'm paying out of state tuition too, i'm from PA, but my girlfriend lives in St. Paul, so I came out here for that.

I didn't mention this, but last semester, we had about 5 students in awol, it had just started in january. We do a pretty pathetic job of publicizing things, obviously, since we're only 5. But an amazing thing happened last week, and after only a fwe of us each putting in an hour flyering, 30 people came out to our meeting! Talk about the time a changin!

10. Good for you for keeping at it.

The tide is turning, and while it's still warm up there, make the most of it. It's not enough to just march and protest, you have to get involved in the most basic political issues in your locality. I went to DC and marched, and now I'm involved in my state's voting machine selection. If you can't depend on your vote, you can't depend on anything.

It seems like a concerned citizen, who also happens to be an NRA member, has taken issue to the walkout.

He addressed me about his grievances as seen below:

12. Seg, I was glad to see a STRONG college presence in DC

There was a group of hundreds of students marching together - white and black signs. I have some pictures and will post on your thread.

Plus hopefully (although I'm not sure how likely it is) we can match that with U students!
